Cora, after a moment of surprise (the type that never wears off, even though you think it would), walks in.

She disappears upstairs to retrieve a book from the library, before heading to the fire.

What? You can't fault a girl for following a routine-though she'd not mind conversation.

One of these days, Edmund will see someone and think 'Gosh, she looks interesting; perhaps I should walk over and say hullo' rather than 'Gosh, she looks interesting; I should sketch her.'

Today, however, is not that day.

He is, at least, correct that the way she sits bending over her book makes for an interesting sketch. Pencils can't really capture the effect of the firelight, but the composition at least keeps him occupied.

Cora doesn't notice him for a while--she's never been too good at picking up on other people looking at her.

She glances up from her book, finally, and spots him.

And blinks, eloquently.

Edmund's glancing down at his page to pencil in a bit of shading along the jaw, but a moment later his eyes flicker back to her to check the accuracy.

He has the grace to look slightly sheepish.

They're too far apart for comfortable talking, so he picks up his pencils and sketchbook (leaving his dinner dishes for a rat to tidy up) and heads over. "I say," he says when he's closer, "I'm sorry -- I suppose I ought to have asked first if you minded my drawing you."

"I don't mind," Cora assures, with a startled smile, "but I can't say I was expecting it. Are you an artist?"

She's really more surprised that someone would waste paper sketching her--though it is less expensive, here.

Would she mind a cat insinuating itself into the book's place on her lap?

It's warm!

She would not mind!

Cora startles when that cat appears, before laughing.

"Well, hello there," setting aside the book and petting him, "I've not seen you in awhile."

He purrs against her knee, green eyes half closed in pleasure at the luxurious petting. His fur is delightfully soft and thick against Cora's hand. He seems glad to see her, as well.

"You must have been sleeping off somewhere I couldn't see," she theorizes. "Though your fur is rather distinctive."

Cora's fond of cats, so the petting continues.

Pet, pet, pet.
