Today, however, is not that day.
He is, at least, correct that the way she sits bending over her book makes for an interesting sketch. Pencils can't really capture the effect of the firelight, but the composition at least keeps him occupied.

She glances up from her book, finally, and spots him.
And blinks, eloquently.

He has the grace to look slightly sheepish.
They're too far apart for comfortable talking, so he picks up his pencils and sketchbook (leaving his dinner dishes for a rat to tidy up) and heads over. "I say," he says when he's closer, "I'm sorry -- I suppose I ought to have asked first if you minded my drawing you."
