Lee tends to notice things, and what he doesn't, Hester does. And it's thanks to the hare, this time, that he moves his feet out of Hale's way without even looking up.

Thank the gods [or whatever it is you believe in] for sentient, sapient animals.

Lee would've had more than a few toes tread upon by an unwitting Hale.

The sound of movement catches Hale's attention and he looks in the direction of the noise.

"Who is there?" he asks the stranger he thinks is before him.
