It has been a long day, and it was an even longer night, but there are chores to be done and so Caspian, weary and looking far older than he had yesterday, goes to the Bar for a cup of tea before he walks out to the stables to check on the animals. Tired though he is, preoccupied though his mind might be, however, the sight of a man feeding a foal in the middle of the bar catches his wandering attention, and he watches, bemused.
Preoccupied though he is, the Ranger is finely attuned to the sensation of being watched. However, it is a friendly feeling of being watched. He turns slightly and catches the eye of the watcher.
"Good evening," he says pleasantly...then is abruptly interrupted by the foal losing the nipple and dribbling milk on his knees. "Carefully, young one," he says to her, presenting it once again to her.
"Good evening to you," Caspian replies, and though his eyes burn tiredly, he watches with interest before speaking again.
"I beg your pardon, sir, but would you not rather make use of the stables and the resources there to care for your charge, rather than keeping it here in the Bar?"
"Well, if Lady Bar doesn't unBind me, I suppose I should," he says. "But considering what this little one has been through, I wanted to get some food into her immediately."
The Ranger's smile may look as weary as Caspian feels.
"I was not expecting Bar to bring me - and by extension, her - to Milliways."
That's ... well, that's different, to say the least, and attracts Nefret's attention rather rapidly.
Ramses and the Professor had always scolded her for doing such things in their house, but as no one in Milliways seems to mind yet, she makes her way over.
"I've taken care of the little wee ones before, if you'd like any help," she offers. "What's her name?"
"I don't believe I've found one for her yet," he says. "There has not been what you would consider much time. But, if you could possibly hold the bottle while I get a drink of my own, I would be most grateful."
The bloodstains on his robe may be somewhat large for someone who merely assisted a horse's delivery.
The filly seems nervous as the stranger approaches. But, after the Ranger touches her neck and gives her a peculiar little smile, she relaxes and eagerly switches nurses.
"I shall not be long, ma'am," he says. Then strides quickly to the Bar. The waitrats are either busy or nervous about the horse.
The man in the gray suit nearly chokes on his glass of Atlantean at the sight. "Good Lord! Who or what happened to you, neighbor? Was it the same thing that happened to that..." He sniffs the air a moment. "...filly?"
"Not personally," he says darkly. "But, yes, a great many of the Zarg who were hunting them were killed. They may have improved in intelligence over time, but they still have difficulty knowing when they are...outclassed."
The foal picks up on his anger and twitches a way. The Ranger calms himself, then reaches out to reassure her.
"But, I fear the damage has been done, and no amount of retribution will undo it."

She does not ask if he's been in a motorcar accident recently, though it's terribly tempting.

"Nothing happened to me besides getting blood on my clothes," he says. His eyes harden at the memory. "The blood of this poor one's mother, I fear."
