"What's wrong?" Asks the child, blinking up at him with his big blue eyes. He acts as if the entire incident at the end of their previous conversation never happened. "You not playing today?"

"I'm--" He gestures to his companions. "Talking. To my friends."

Megan is blining at the newcomer with all the curiosity of a toddler.

Liam sneaks up on the group, swinging Megan up in his arms to make her laugh.

"Hey."

"Hello," says Karen, standing up to kiss him and put her arms around his waist.

Karen steers him away from the others a little and murmurs, "Charlie's a little upset. SOmething about a boy who isn't a boy. I'm not sure I quite understand.

"And those two?" She points. "Gods."
