Phil is sitting at a small table gazing very hard at the small box in front of her. Those who observe her closely will see that it is full of chocolates, and if you perhaps wonder why a small box of chocolates is worthy of such intense scrutiny, then you can't have met Phil yet.

After all, how ever is she to decide which one to eat? It is clearly ( Read more... )

Girls with boys' nickames must stick together.

Thus, Fred is at a nearby table, scribbling intently into a notebook, and occasionally pausing to chew on the end of her pen.

She happens to look up and see the girl staring at the box of chocolates, and smiles, momentarily distracted from whatever it is she's writing.

"Got a secret admirer?"

She smiles over at the other girl.

"Oh, it's no secret. They're from Alec, one of my beaux. Chocolates are always from Alec, you know. He knows I've got such a sweet tooth. The trouble is, there's always at least one chocolate with walnuts in it, and I simply cannot stand walnuts. But you never can tell by looking on the outside can you? No, one must simply take the risk of finding walnuts in one's chocolate every now and then."

She shrugs and laughs.

"My name is Phil, by the way, Phil Gordon."

"I'm Fred Burkle. It's short for Winnifred, but the only people who call me that are from different centuries or insane." Fred replies, with a half-smile.

"And when I got chocolates I used to take a pin and poke holes in the bottom of each and every one to avoid the caramel ones, so I see your dilemma."

Fred makes a face at the thought of caramel marring perfectly good chocolate. What? The girl has standards.

"Well, I am almost certainly from a different century, but I am quite certainly not insane, so I shall call you Fred. I do understand the difficulty, you know. My mother calls me Philippa," she says, with a bit of an eye-roll.

She raises an eyebrow, "No caramel? Why, those are the best ones!"

She looks perplexed that anyone would ever want to avoid caramel.

"Is this some private act of worship?"

Xas' voice is light and amused, and coming from somewhere to Phil's left.

She looks up with a grin.

"Well, I would say that chocolate is certainly worthy of a little bit of worship every now and again, wouldn't you?"

She is equally amused, and smiles even more broadly.

"But chocolate should never be worshipped alone. Would you care to join me?"

"I wouldn't mind joining you for the chocolate, but, if you don't mind, I'd rather avoid the worship."

He smiles, and takes a seat.

"It's a deal. Do, please sit down. It's always nice to have company."

She holds out her hand, "My name is Philippa Gordon, Phil for short. You will call me Phil, won't you? Only my mother calls me Philippa, and it makes me feel so very old."
