William's decided he wants to get a better idea of what's happened to the woods and if he's riding then he can get away faster.

His gun's loaded and he has extra ammunition and hopefully he can handle what's out there.

He'll start towards the range and keep well away from the lake and the shooting building if he can.

Teja is by the forge, working upon something one would never have imagined to see him with.

A clear pane of glass, some tubes and plastic implements, and a book titled 'Repairing Windscreens For Dummies'. And as fumes and forge fires do not mix well, he is doing it outside, even though it is very cold.

The cats are watching with great curiosity.

...

When William passes, Teja looks up from his work. "Greetings," he says.

William nods and rides over, keeping his horse not too close to the work,

"Anythin' new out here, sir?"

"Apart from the red skies, the house shooting at people, the crater in the forest, the deep cold and snow and the vermin?" Teja says. "No."

Les paws at the ground and William does his best to soothe him,

"What are you makin'?"

"Apparently, as Guppy claims, it is possible to repair a pane of glass with a chink in," he says. "So I am trying this out, so I may do it if needed, upon the great Window inside."

"Oh, that'd be an amazin' thing to do," He didn't realize that was even possible.

"So I thought also," Teja says, "which is why I am learning it, lest it be said that a dead Gothic smith from the Dark Ages is too barbaric to comprehend it."

"Who'd say that?"

People in Milliways don't seem to go out of their way to point out what you know and don't know, it's something William's grateful for.

"Guppy implied, right after he mentioned 'windscreen repair' as an invention from his time," Teja says.

"Oh, I know glass it always tricky to work with,"

He thought it was another type of skill than forge work.

Of course it is, but Teja is proud of using many techniques. He does work regularly with glass, too, when making cloisonné-inlaid jewellery.

"It is," Teja says. "It will all shatter when one makes a tiny mistake. I haven often used liquid glass for inlaying jewellery."

"Then I'm sure you'll figure it out, sir. I think I'll leave you, Les is nervous and don't want him messin' your work up,"

His horse slightly dances at all the strange sounds of everything going wrong.

"Indeed," Teja says, "a horse stepping against a window pane would be truly a bad thing."

Pause.

"If you see that mermaid of yours, tell her not to come back. I would not have any patron trapped here, if the worst comes to the worst, for as I am of Security, the safety of them all is my duty. Even hers."

"Yes, sir,"

He's not planning to go near the lake as that's where the shooting house is and turns to ride towards the forest.

Teja nods, watching him go, then turns back to his work.

William rides towards the forest, acutely aware that at any moment there might be some new strangeness and passed beneath two trees to someplace he didn't mean to be.
