Finally, the Resistance has had some good news. Oh, sure, they're still short on manpower, supplies, and transportation ( at least as far as Alyx knows), but Alyx thinks she may have hit a breakthrough on PIaDOS's systems. Assuming she can get the right parts ( Read more... )

There is a second person studying the bits spread out on the table with cocked head, and a tiny pout as he concentrates on the pieces.

"Vhat is all zis?"

"By all means," he says, holding his hand carefully still as she picks it up. "Hardvare is not my specialty," he admit openly, "But yes, it could vork zis vay. do you know ze system reqvirements of ze AI?"

"Only very vaguely." Alyx gently pushes the chip into place, then reaches for the multimeter again. "There were some schematics on the ship's computers, but everything Aperture makes is so insane that I--"

"AAAAAAA"

Alyx drops the multimeter probes in shock. The electronic wail immediately dwindles away to nothing.

Pavel stares at the chip at the tiny wail that came from it, glancing at Alyx.

"Zat va not my imagination..." he murmurs, picking up one of the multimeter probes to repeat the touching and see if that was just a one-time response.

For a quarter-second, there's complete silence. Then:

"Hello?"

"...PI??" Alyx is boggling.

Pavel's just staring still, but doesn't take his hand away.

"Vell. At least is not beyond repair, zis ve know," he says, blinking. He has never had a chip do this to him that he can recall, that wasn't in a dream.

"is SOMEone there?" The voice is frightened, faltering. "I can't hear me anymore..."

Pavel glances at Alyx, eyebrows raised, but answers. "Yes...I am Pavel Chekov," he says, unsure of exactly how a conversation with an inanimate piece of machinery is supposed to go. "Alyx is here."

"helLO? HeLlO?"

"I don't think she can hear us," murmurs Alyx.

"Zat vould seem to make sense," he agrees. "But, ve know she is not beyond repair, at least zis part."

Alyx nods. "Take the current off. You're freaking her out."

He pulls the micrometer away, looking at the chip still with a kind of puzzled interest. "I hawe newer had a chip react zis vay. Do you know vhat kind of AI she is?"

"She wasn't initially built to be sentient, if that's what you mean," says Alyx. "She was an emergent intelligence, and from what I gather that kind of freaked out her creators."

He makes an impressed noise. "Had computers already surpassed ze Turing potential by zen, or vas she ze first?"

"Given that this was in 1986? I'm pretty sure she was the first."

Why Aperture sat on that discovery, Alyx will never be able to fathom.

That definitely earns a quizzical look as Pavel wonders pretty much the same thing. "Oh. And vhat year is it for you now?"
