Cassie threw her backpack to the floor as she slammed the door to Kara's apartment behind her.
"Ugh! You'd think the Elias School would be a little more understanding about having to skip class because a giant squid-demon attacked the bay! Isn't half the student body superheroes by now?"
Cassie looked around the apartment. Usually Kara was right there to greet her, especially after a bad day, and not having her girlfriend throw her arms around her the second she set foot in the door was unusual. Today, Kara was sitting by the window, staring into space, her cape wrapped around her as if she was clinging to it for warmth. Cassie walked over to her.
"Babe? What's wrong? I mean, you're normally all over me, especially when I'm freaking out over something. What's wrong?"
Kara turned to Cassie, her eyes red from crying. "What's it like, Cassie? What's it like to be human?"
Cassie sat down on the bed next to Kara, stroking her hair. "Trust me, it's not all it's cracked up to be. What's going on?"
Kara looked up at the sky, her x-ray vision focusing in the distance. "It was today. 35 years ago...although, for me, it's really more like two years. Krypton blew up, and I lost the only home I've ever known. I'm just...really missing my parents right now, my friends, my home...And no matter how many friends I have here, I'll never be one of you. I don't know how to be."
Cassie tightly wrapped her arms around Kara. "Gods, why didn't you tell me this was today? I totally would have stayed home with you. You shouldn't be alone right now."
"I thought I'd be okay." Kara shook her head. "I didn't know how tough it would be. Kal doesn't know it, but he's really lucky. He doesn't remember Krypton. He can mourn an idea and move on with his life. I just wish I could forget, so I would stop feeling like an outsider here."
"I don't want you to be human, though." Cassie smiled. "You're unique, and I love you for it. My beautiful Kryptonian angel."
Kara snuggled up to Cassie, burying her head in her shoulder. "I just wish I could belong somewhere. I'll never forget Krypton, but if this is my home now, I want to know what it's like to be one of you. But that's kind of hard to do when everyone looks at you like some kind of icon all the time."
"I know. But you've got me, right? And every time this day rolls around, I'll be there for you."
Cassie kissed Kara on the lips as they lay down on the bed. It had been a long day for both of them, and a nice relaxing snuggle together seemed like just the ticket.
__________
"No! No!"
Cassie was woken up out of her sleep by Kara thrashing in her sleep. She reached over and gently tried to shake her awake.
"Kara, it's okay, it's just a bad dream - OW!"
Cassie was thrown back as Kara struck out with her fist, hitting her square in the face. Kara shot up out of bed, seeing Cassie holding her hand over her eye.
"Oh, God. What did I do?"
"It's okay, babe. You were just having a bad dream."
"Krypton...again." Kara gently took Cassie's arm. "Let me see."
Kara gasped when she saw the bruise under Cassie's eye.
"It's nothing, Kara. It was an accident. Really."
"I know, but...I hurt you. If I wasn't this damn strong all the time, this wouldn't happen. One of these days, something even worse could happen."
Kara, tears filling her eyes, flew out the window. Cassie collapsed against the wall. Kara was hurting, and she wished there was something - anything - she could do about it.
Maybe there was.

Intruder alerts at the Fortress of Solitude were rare, to say the least, and they usually didn't happen almost undetected late at night. Superman didn't know exactly what he expected when he arrived, but it definitely wasn't Cassie Sandsmark trapped in a security net.
"Ugh. Could you let me down from here, Supes? By the way, your robot is way too handsy with the intruders."
"Kelex picked up some...unfortunate behavior patterns from Earth. Now explain. What possessed you to break into the fortress? And what are you holding?"
Cassie sheepishly held out the small watch in her hand as Superman let her down from the net.
"Is that the red sun watch I made for Chris? What would you want with that?"
"It's for Kara."
Superman thought for a second, and then shook his head with disgust. "I'm fine with you two dating, but I don't need to know what kind of games you two like to play, and I definitely don't want you stealing from my fortress to help with them!"
"Um, ew!" Cassie shook her head. "It's not like that! She's feeling really lonely, especially today, with it being the anniversary...."
Superman nodded. "I know. I asked her if she wanted to attend the memorial ceremony I hold, but she said she wanted to be alone."
"She wants to know what it's like to belong on Earth. You had a while where you were human before you got your powers, and I was just thinking...if she got the chance to try it out, if she at least had the choice to be normal some of the time, it might make it easier on her."
Superman's face was still skeptical. "The last time someone used that watch, my apartment got blown up."
"Well, duh! Because it was calibrated for an adult, not a kid! Kara's not an adult, but she's almost fully grown. That won't happen. I mean, I might be completely off here, but I'd just like to see if this would make her feel better. I've got to do something."
Superman nodded. "Let me work on it for a few hours. I'll change the control mechanism so she can turn it on and off at will. If you're right...this is something very sweet you're doing here."
"Thanks."
"But if I ever catch you breaking into the fortress again, I'm not calling Wonder Woman. I'm calling your mother."
Cassie gulped. "Noted."
______________
Kara flew in the window the next morning. She had spent the night circling the globe, trying to get what had happened out of her head. Seeing that bruise on Cassie's face and knowing that she had carelessly put it there....she wouldn't blame Cassie if she was gone.
But she wasn't. She was sitting there on the bed, waiting for her, the bruise already almost healed.
"Hey, K. I was worried about you."
"Cassie? I can't believe you're still here. I'm sorry I hurt you."
Cassie smiled. "It's nothing. Just a bad dream. Now come here. I've got something I want to show you."
Kara sat down next to Cassie as Cassie draped her arm around her and handed her the small wrapped box. "This is for you. It's totally up to you what you want to do with it, but if you want...maybe it could help make you feel like one of us."
Kara opened the box and gasped. She had heard Superman talk about this device, how he used it to keep his foster son's powers under control so the little boy wouldn't hurt anyone until he learned to control his abilities.
"This will...make me human?"
"Sort of. It'll remove your powers whenever you want it to. All you have to do to switch it off is press a button, and they'll return in seconds. The power's completely in your hands. But if you want to feel normal, this might do it. I know it won't take away everything you lost, but this way you could blend in more easily, learn what it's like to be human. It's totally up to you."
Kara lightly tossed the watch between her hands. "So I could turn it on, and not have to worry about hurting someone just by bumping into them? I could play sports with the Titans? We could have sex without me having to hold back?"
"Totally. And if you want...we can set you up with a new secret ID, and you can give life as a normal girl another try. You wouldn't be playing at it this time. And I'd be there to help you adjust to everything."
Kara's hands were shaking. "Do...do you think you could help me put it on?"
Cassie gently took Kara's wrist and wrapped the watch around it, fastening the clamp. Her hand hovered over the button. "Are you sure?"
Kara nodded, and Cassie pressed the button. Kara felt an odd tingle take over her body as her powers left her. Cassie stroked her cheek.
"How does it feel?"
"Strange. Everything's so different. I can't see or hear as far. It's weird. But your touch...it's so much more intense. Thanks for this."
Kara wrapped her arms around Cassie and kissed her passionately as the two girls fell down on the bed. Carefully, Cassie lifted Kara's shirt off her and softly kissed her breasts.
"You know what the best part of this is?" Cassie asked as she ran a finger down Kara's bare stomach to her skirt?"
Kara's eyes were wide with anticipation. "I can guess."
"Now I get to be as gentle with you as you always are with me. I love you, Kara Zor-El."
Cassie snuck her hand under Kara's skirt and caressed her thigh as Kara yelped with delight. Kara's skin was so soft and perfect, like a precious porcelain doll. She was breakable now, Cassie thought to herself. She'd have to be extra careful. Supergirl may have been the best girlfriend ever, but she was really looking forward to giving Kara Zor-El the best time of her life.
