Gruinard Island Retrieval Mission- Let The Mayhem Commence

Jun 17, 2006 12:20

In an island full of scientists and soldiers there are inevitably going to be those who take the easy way out. When the behavioural conditioning go-rounds with the stock in 4B, 4C, and the kennels are out of the way for the day, those responsible for the beasts within cannot always be expected to muster the enthusiasm to monitor their charges ( Read more... )

This part of the rotation is characterized by long stretches of uneventful nothing.

It's not as though the team's not prepared for events of interest. The most common weapons are submachine guns. Of course, some of the boys are partial to shotguns. Washington himself has always preferred the rifle. There's also a grenade launcher or two stashed in a locker, but those aren't the first things any of the men reach for.

Washington's passing through when he sees Farrel moving. He glances at the lights, turns, and signals through the door. There's little conversation as, in the rooms around him, the team draws together.

He indicates two of his men and starts for the security room as they move away. He'll go have a look at the big picture. It's most likely the ape was nipped by a rat and is setting off the alarm in a fit of annoyance. But there's a possibility there's something there.

While he's keying in his security code, two men are nearing the archive room. One covers the other as he reaches for the door.

The security room cameras are not behaving as they ought to, by the look of things. One of the external cameras would pass muster by almost anyone else in the facility, but there's something not quite right- too steady, maybe- about the image displayed. Or something, anyway.

Camera two is at the bottom of the steps leading into the facility. Everything looks perfectly calm, perfectly quiet-

-is that a flicker rolling across the screen every five seconds?

Washington reaches to turn the first monitor while counting off for the second. That's not quite right, but it's going to take him a minute to figure out just how. . . the angle is a bit off, isn't it? And--

He gets bad news from Galloway.

All right. There's one confirmed spy, possible support outside. He stares at the monitor for a few seconds more, then realizes where he's seen that angle before. It's what you get when you prop up a mirror, careful not to reflect the camera.

The first order of business is to get the noncoms out of the way. The second is to get the facility locked down, sweep the outside for his suppport and eliminate them, and then question the prisoner.

Washington uses his key on a panel, pops it, and punches the red button. That's going to get some attention.

Alarms are going off all over the place inside the Gruinard research facility. Underground, people in white coats are running about like ants, or being herded into safe-rooms per security protocols established since the 1980s. It's been a long, long time since any of those were anything but drills, though. This? This is the real thing. Very soon there are going to be soldiers spilling out of the facility. The real nightmares are being kept inside, but men with guns can be just as bad ( ... )

The approach this squad is going to take will vary depending on exactly how early they intend to start causing their property damage. This is, after all, an underground facility. There's the stuff that can be reached through the door Cooper used, of course, but then again... well. Something's got to get air into the building and out, doesn't it? And there's the water and electric question as well; some things are best kept outside...

Of course, there's generators and power rooms and computing machinery inside the building. Multi-layer complexes that deal in large animal research are bound to have elevators, and there's the climate control system. Plenty of stuff to wreck there, too. Assuming they get past the soldiery, of course.

Sharpe has a sword and a rifle that can be used for property destruction two different ways.

He's more than prepared to start breaking as soon as he sees breakables.

Arithon has magic, and a knife for just-in-case. He knows what he's good at, and he's better at magic than fighting.

Quietly, mildly, with a certain sense of dry humor,

"Can any of the rest of you see in the dark?"

Because confusion and illusion are what he's best of all at.

Possibly they can, or possibly they can't. They may have to, at any rate; the exterior of the complex has ventilation shafts in plenty, heating-cooling equipment exposed to the air, and other such targets visible.

Visible, in fact, to the furiously screaming ospreys clawing their way up the sky just at the moment. They're not headed for the complex directly yet- busy squabbling with each other- but they'll be there soon, and by the look of things they've got belly cameras too.

Compared to the i-war people, Red Squad's job is fairly simple. Somewhere in this building are the papers Cooper presumably managed to snatch already. Get those, get Cooper, and get out. Of course, Cooper was in a hell of a fix when he called in, and there's no clear indicator of exactly where the Scotsman is.

Well, no, that's not true. He can be tracked, assuming magic hasn't covered his trail- and assuming gas masks don't suddenly come into play.

Can you tell which way he's gone?

*Andrew's got his tranq gun out, and his free hand is holding something small that's attached to a loop of black cord hanging around his neck.*

Wells is only half listening at the moment. He's got his helmet off and his eyes closed-

-no, wait, they're open again. "He's been here," he mutters, jerking his chin towards the door and the staircase. "Headed downwards and through, but there's a lot of people on the other side of that door."

And here, as they say, goes nothing. The Black Ops men who're being sent out to wipe up the 'spy's' support team are going to run across this group first. They'll need concealment, and they'll need to be ready for combat- with just about anything.

Some of the Black Ops men have the authority to throw open the cages on the red level, after all.

Blue eyes scan the area as they aproach the entrance. So far, everything seems relatively quiet, but they all know how quickly that can change. Archie thinks it's rather a shame that he never learned more about espionage...

And when it does change, it will change nearly too fast-

Svava already has her sword out in her right hand, left up and ready to trace the runes in the air for spell work. She has never had to do stealth work- Svava just keeps her steps as quiet as possible, her movements steady.

Preston follows after, alert and aware as always. That's well enough. The clouds Svava called down earlier are debating whether or not to burst, and the fog is starting to roll in ahead of them, as it so often does at this hour around here.

Company's coming.

A voice crackles across the radios of everyone in Teams Blue and Gold- Cooper's voice. "Everybody back to the boat! We've got the objective, but we've got a man down!"

Sharpe doesn't waste any time chivvying the others out of the room and towards the gathering point, his wounded arm cradled to his chest.

Lando follows close behind. He looks for one of the mages, wondering if a quick spell of some kind could help Sharpe, but then suspects that Sharpe doesn't need it jsut yet.

The group that's already reached the boat is probably going to need some sort of spell more- at least, if Wells' unconscious, armoured form is anything to go by. Not that Cooper exactly looks pristine, but at least he's up and on his feet. Wells looks like somebody fished him out of a walk-in freezer, at least in terms of skin tone and responsiveness right now.
