Gruinard Island Retrieval Mission - Cooper

Jun 08, 2006 13:13

The boat's been pulled into the closest, safest cove Wells could find- one near the sheer drop at the high end of the island, rather than the 'official' dock used by Ministry scientists on periodic missions to check the anthrax's strength. There's another entrance around here somewhere, if the fact that there's a clear channel to put the boat ( Read more... )

The ventilation system continues to rattle. This should not be a surprise.

The surprising part should be the two huge leathery hands that clap themselves over either side of Cooper's head with the force of stone paddles.

"Ook."

"Holy shit..."

And he finishes the zip on his bag before nodding, hard and rolling away to look at his adversary. Some sort of ninja or--

...

"The bloody fuck..."

Yes, you'll notice the ellipses. They're required when a GIANT FUCKING NOT!MONKEY drops out of the ventilation shaft.

The ape's lips peel back from its yellowing teeth, a gesture that looks nothing like a smile and everything like a threat display. It shuffles backwards from Cooper with disturbing agility, circling around to keep its back towards the door as it eyes the man- then, without any further warning at all, it leaps at his lower legs, three hundred pounds of mass concentrated into making an impact on Cooper's shins.

Cooper ducks back and rolls. He knows he can't face that kind of force or mass.

No, he can't. And the orang theoretically shouldn't be able to recover from missing, either, but the damn thing twists in mid-lunge, rolling and rolling on long bendy arms. One lashes out and grabs hold of the side of a filing cabinet, whipping the mass of the beast around sharply just in time to avoid slamming into the wall. Auguste bounces up onto his feet and faces Cooper again, screeching with fury before scrambling up the side of the nearest cabinet. Apparently, the beast knows what 'death from above' entails.

And Coop slams his hand on the button for the radio.

"SARGE, GET YOUR FURRY ASS IN HERE NOW! FUCKIN--"

And then the radio is forgotten as he moves to try to avoid Death from Above.

The door opens. Galloway moves through first, sweeping the room once. Thompson rolls through the door behind him. At the sound of a voice, Galloway looks for the radio as the man dodges, spots it on the floor, and puts two bullets into it. Nobody outside their forces needs to know what's happening.

"Do not move." That's Galloway, gun levelled at Coop's center of mass now that he's quite sure he's gotten his attention. Thompson has already turned to watch down the hallway. "Auguste! Stand down!" It's going to be hard to properly detain him with an ape jumping up and down on him. He'll report in once they have the man contained and unarmed.

Cooper growls but stays put for the moment.

"Auguste, how many?" Thompson moves into the room behind him as he circles. They're in a triangle so that, if he either to shoot the intruder, he won't run the risk of a bullet going through him and hitting the Very Expensive Ape. They're clear of each other's lines of fire, too.

"Hands up. Turn around slowly. Hands on the wall, over your head." They're closing in now, close enough that Thompson gets his pistol out, rather than a more cumbersome semiautomatic rifle. Galloway stays further back. "This is not the time to be a hero."

Thompson is good at the convincing "you might survive this" tone.

"Don't have to be a hero. The only other humans in the room're shit. That puts me ahead automatically."

His face is blank, though, as he does what he's told.

The ape hoots madly, fidgeting in the way he so often does when he's about to start jumping up and down. The human is there. The target is there. He's not allowed to jump on him? This is SO BLOODY WRONG.

In a fit of frustrated simian rage Auguste makes a number of rapid-fire gestures that look very, very complicated. In fact they are more along the lines of fruit now banana good Auguste want grape now now first fruit yes.

Yes. Yes, it is unfair, Auguste.

"Hurry up," Galloway mutters. Thompson pats the man down quickly, divesting him of a semiauto and a pair of knives. He pulls the back of his collar down to see if there's a chain for tags. He's not really expecting one.

"That's it," Thompson says, moving back again and aiming for Coop's back.

Galloway points his gun at the ceiling for a moment while he breaks into his pocket for his stash of Orangutan Treats. They all carry them for when Auguste is in a bad mood and corners someone to show off his wall-bouncing skills until that person feeds him. Galloway taps a box on his belt as he hands over the goods and speaks into his throat mic. "Sir? We've detained an intruder." He listens for a moment. "Hands on your head. Step away from the wall. Don't turn around."

There will have to be a little shuffling if Auguste doesn't settle down a bit. It'll be easier if the man doesn't know exactly where they are.

He nods sharply.

He won't do anything unless they try and meddle with the backpack, but they probably think that's supplies. It's not as if they know about the boats waiting.

Auguste bares his teeth again, but the treats are enough to mollify the beast at least somewhat. He shuffles back from the edge of the cabinet and starts chowing down, beady black eyes glaring down at the human he wasn't allowed to disable.

There's movement behind Cooper as one soldier loops his foot through the bag's strap and hauls it in. It could be an awful lot of fun if there were, say, three out of five bombs in there and they didn't check it out.

There's the sound of the zipper opening.

Just remember, Cooper: one is aiming, the other is ready, and bullets are bad.

He shakes a little as they open the bag before keeping himself straight and still.
