The ever-confusing BAH...

Background info:  He's in the Army (three more years).  He's deploying later this year.  I'm in grad school (three more years).  We're engaged.  Since we won't be able to be together, we aren't planning on getting married until after he's out of the Army and I'm done with school.  But seeing as it's a military relationship, there's always the idea ( Read more... )

We got BAH and Separation Pay while he was in boot camp - BAH for my zip code, in Oregon. He was home for a month, so no Separation Pay, but he got subsistence pay - then he was gone for two months again, one month for combat training (BAH + Separation Pay)and one month before I was able to join him in Cali. I know we got BAH for that second month, I don't know if we got Separation Pay or not. Now we should be getting BAH for the new zip code here in Cali - which is TWICE what I was getting in Oregon. I don't know if we're getting Subsistence Pay or not, but we should be. Then again, he's still eating in the chow hall twice a day, so I'm not sure how that's working currently.

if you are married while he is deployed you will get around $600 a month in extra pay.... and yes if you two are married he can live on base as a geographical bachelor and get BAH but he doesnt get separation pay unless the army takes him away from base for more than 30 days.

my husband will be doing the geographical bachelor thing when he gets home from Iraq cause he only has a few more months in. so I know that its possible... i do however know that some bases arent as nice about it and will only do it for so long. But I have heard that if you are going to school and thats why you are apart they wont argue

My hubby and I looked into doing this when we get back from Germany so that I can finish school and he can hit up OCS without worrying about me getting my schooling disrupted again. If he lives in the barracks on post you guys will still recieve BAH for the area you're in, but it will only be partial, not the full amount that you would recieve if you and he lived together.
The seperation pay is pretty much only if the Army is forcing you to be seperated. Like if he had orders to go do training and you could not go with him then they may pay you seperation pay.

Good luck to you guys :)
