Medical question

This might be OT, don't know, but I was wondering about tubals and the availability to get them in the military.  You see, I've been arguing with this asshat about the abortion debate in another community, and he said that women can always get a tubal; medical clinics in TN for instance, can offer this procedure to low income women.  Then they ( Read more... )

Its usually either age or number of children, and it varies by insurance company (I used to work for one, our req. was 25+ and/or at least 2 children).

But its not because they don't think we know our own minds, and more because a woman who says at 18 that she doesn't want children and goes for surgical sterilization may regret the decision when she's 30, and then its 'too late'. The form you have to sign to have en elective sterilization must be signed at least 30 days prior to and no more then 6 months prior to the surgery date, and it reiterates that this is not something to be taken lightly and not reversible. Yes, a tubal ligation is technically reversible, but most insurances wont cover having it undone so they put that language into their forms to prevent problems. And some doctors have their own screening process and ideas about when/what requirements they have to perform it.

I wonder why the insurance companies won't cover the reversal. Is it because it would be more of a complicated procedure than getting reversal on a vasectomy?

And yeah, they ARE in effect saying that women don't know their own minds. You just said that the company won't cover you because 'you might change your mind later'. But at the same time I do see their point; some women MAY change their minds in the future, but not all. I just find it a little biased that they won't bat an eyelash for guy's snip job, but make a woman jump through a bunch of hoops to get hers.

Well, you also might change your mind after a boob job, too! You may wake up one morning and be like "Oh Shit, these double d's are sagging to my knees now!"- but no one's telling Pam Anderson she can't have another boob job. It IS bias, and it really sucks, especially since it's such a crucial issue.
