Harry waits for the class to settle in, before giving a brief lecture on magic in the Greco-Roman world"The interesting thing here is that magic acts were defined differently than religious ones... that is, people today might look back at it, and see all of it as 'magic,' but to the people of the time, there was a distinction between the two. Sam thought about what he would consider magic. "I think magic encompasses people who use paranormal means to accomplish things."

After starting to get scientific help from the Doctor for the problems caused "magically" by Iblis... Pippi has actually been thinking along these lines though not in a religious context... She was thinking a lot about Al and his assertion that "alchemy" as he practiced it, was not magic but science.

"Somebody once told me that technology, sufficiently advanced, was indistinguishable from magic... Do you think that science and magic have a similar sort of... I dunno relationship as religion and magic?"

He nodded. "That's a good point, actually. I think they do. I mean, the spells and rituals may seem like a lot of hocus pocus, but when you get down to it, you have to do things right--the right ingredients in the right amounts--or it doesn't work, just like a chemistry experiment wouldn't work if you used the wrong stuff, or your cake wouldn't work if you switched sugar for salt. For me, at least, it's all very down-to-earth stuff."
