Chapter 28
Devon had just pulled the food off the stove when his doorbell rang. He wiped his hand on his apron and crossed to the door. When he opened the door Garrett was standing on his porch, his lab coat and tie changed in favor of a plain button-up shirt and well-worn jeans. “Hey.” Devon smiled and opened the door wider to let him in.
“Nice place.” Garrett observed as he walked in, taking in the living room.
“Thanks.” Devon closed the door. “Make yourself at home. Dinner should be done in five.”
“Sounds good.” Garrett watched Devon walk into the kitchen and followed, leaning against the island. Devon began plating the food (tilapia and orzo with lemon sauce). Garrett smiled as he observed Devon in his home environment. He chuckled as he read the front of Devon’s apron.
“What?” Devon asked, turning around.
Garrett grinned and motioned to Devon’s apron. “’Kiss the Cook,’ huh?”
Devon looked down and laughed. “Yeah. It was a gift from my mom.” He turned back to the plates and dished up some salad and some vinaigrette. “Hungry?” He asked as he brought the plates and two glasses of white wine to the preset table.
“Starving.” Garrett sat in one of the chairs and watched as Devon pulled out a lighter and ignited the wicks of two tea lights in the middle of the table. “Candles?” He raised an eyebrow.
Devon pulled off his apron and hung it on a hook before sitting across from Garrett. “Yeah, what of ‘em?”
“Nothing.”Garrett took a bite of his fish when Devon gestured for him to eat. He closed his eyes and moaned a little. “The lemon sauce is delicious.” He licked his lips and took another bite.
Devon smiled and took a bite of his food before washing it down with a sip of wine. “Ah, just a little something I threw together.”
Garrett laughed. “That’s like me saving someone’s life and then saying it was nothing.”
“Totally not the same.” Devon protested with a smile. “I did nothing to save the life of this poor fish.” Garrett choked on his sip of wine. “Woah, easy. I’m not qualified to perform CPR or anything.”
Garrett held up his hand and managed a breath. “I’m fine.” He took another sip. Devon gave a half smile.

After dinner, Garrett and Devon retired to the couch each with a small bowl of raspberry sorbet and a second glass of wine.
“Dinner was amazing.” Garrett spooned a bite of sorbet into his mouth.
Devon blushed. “Thanks.” He ate some of his own sorbet and took a sip of wine.
“We should do this again.” Garrett licked his spoon.
“Yeah?” Devon glanced at Garrett, eyes transfixed on Garrett’s spoon.
Garrett nodded. “So when do I get to kiss the cook?”
Devon blinked and shook himself out of his trance. “What?” He studied Garrett’s face while he tried to sort out what Garrett had just asked. “Kiss the-” His eyes widened in realization. “Oh!” He blushed and turned his attention to his sorbet bowl.
Garrett blushed and did the same. “Sorry.”
“Nothing to apologize for.” Devon set his bowl on the coffee table and took a sip of wine.
Garrett looked back at Devon, placing his own bowl next to Devon’s. “Not too forward then?” Devon shook his head. “This mean you’re on the menu?” Devon blushed and bit his lower lip. “I’ll take that as a ‘yes’.” Garrett leaned over and pressed his lips to Devon’s. Devon let out a soft sigh when Garrett pulled back. Garrett smiled, taking Devon’s head in his hands. “Definitely should do this again.” He whispered before kissing Devon again. Devon placed his hands over Garrett’s and kissed him back. Garrett pulled back and tried to hide a yawn.
“I saw that, Garrett”
“M’fine.” Garrett laid his head on Devon’s shoulder.
“You need sleep.” Devon played with Garrett’s hair a little. “You’re more than welcome to stay here.” He murmured. “Safer than being on the road.” He looked down at Garrett. “You want to borrow something to sleep in? You can take the couch or the bed. I can sleep anywhere.”
Garrett shrugged one shoulder. “I don’t want to impose.”
Devon rolled his eyes. “You’re not imposing, Garrett.” He stood and pulled Garrett up with him. “Come on.” He pulled him down the hall to the bedroom and grabbed two pairs of pajamas out of the dresser, one for himself and one for Garrett. “Think you can stay awake long enough for pajamas?” Garrett nodded and Devon took his own pajamas into the bathroom. Devon changed into his pajama bottoms and t-shirt and fixed his ponytail. He poked his head out of the bathroom door to find Garrett half-passed out on the bed in just his pajama pants. Garrett looked up at the sound of door and sleepily motioned for Devon to join him. Devon made his way over to the bed.
“C’mere.” Garrett mumbled.
Devon smiled and lay down next to him. “Comfy?” Garrett grunted and wrapped his arms around Devon, pulling him closer. Devon stroked Garrett’s hair.
“Night.” Garrett snuggled his head into Devon’s shirt and drifted off to sleep.
Devon pressed a soft kiss to Garrett’s forehead. “Sleep well, Garrett.”

Devon awoke the next morning with Garrett’s body pressed against his own. He smiled, wrapping his arms around Garrett and snuggling closer.
“Morning.” Garrett smiled and dropped a kiss on the tip of Devon’s nose.
Devon scrunched his face and chuckled. “Morning. Sleep okay?” He asked, running a hand through Garrett’s cropped hair.
“Better than I have in years.” Garrett let himself relax into Devon’s touch. “Thanks for dinner. I’m sorry I couldn’t stay awake.”
Devon snorted. “I know your hours, Garrett. You have nothing to apologize for.” He leaned back a little. “I could always follow up with breakfast.”
Garrett stretched his back. “Breakfast sounds good.”
“Anything you want me to make?” Devon asked as he propped himself up on his elbow. “I’d even be happy to pour some cereal.” Garrett shrugged. “Crepes it is then.” Devon grinned and got out of bed.
“You ever been told that you’re a mother hen?” Garrett smirked up at Devon.
Devon laughed. “Yeah. You ever been told that you can be a bit of a smartass?”
“Only every day.”
Devon regarded the other man. “You want grab a shower or anything?”
“You saying I smell?” Garrett teased.
“No, no. Not in a bad way, at least.” Devon blushed a little and headed for the kitchen.
Garrett stood and ran a hand through his hair. “Mind if I help?” He asked as he followed Devon.
Devon turned as he grabbed the necessary ingredients and utensils for crepes. “You want to?” Devon asked. “I can get kind of pushy in the kitchen.”
Garrett slipped an arm around Devon’s waist. “I deal with worse at work. I think I’ll take my chances.” He kissed Devon’s cheek.
Devon smiled. “Don’t say I didn’t warn you.” Devon put the ingredients on the counter and began getting things ready. “You any good at cracking eggs?” Garrett shrugged. “Well, I guess we’ll find out.” He nudged the egg carton toward Garrett. “Go ahead and crack three of those into the bowl.” Devon began pre-measuring the rest of the ingredients. A particularly loud crack drew his attention. The egg in Garrett’s hand had all but exploded when he’d tried to crack it on the rim of the bowl. “That’s…. one way to do it…”
“I’m sorry.” Garrett sighed as Devon took the eggshell from him and tossed it in the sink.
Devon handed him a second egg. “Just use less force.” He closed his hand over Garrett’s and guided him in egg-cracking technique. “Got it?” Garrett nodded and dropped the eggshell in the sink. “Alright.” Devon rinsed his hand and continued getting ingredients ready to be added to the eggs. “Your turn.” He watched out of the corner of his eye as Garrett cracked the egg without significant mishap. Devon handed him a whisk.
Garrett blinked. “You trust me with this?”
“Trusted you with my friend’s life.” Devon smiled. “Whisking a few eggs should be nothing.” He watched Garrett whisk the eggs. “Good.” He grabbed the other ingredients and started adding them in slowly. Garrett snuck a kiss to Devon’s cheek. Devon blushed. “Looks perfect.” He wrapped his arms around Garrett’s waist and gently pulled him away from the counter. “Now we let it sit for twenty.”
“That, I think I can do.” Garrett turned in Devon’s arms and looked at him. “You’d think with all the stuff I’ve learned, I could handle cooking.”
Devon smiled. “You did fine.” He leveled a look at Garrett. “I haven’t had the urge to strangle you yet, so you’re doing great.” He gave Garrett a quick kiss before raising an eyebrow. “So… if you don’t cook… what do you eat?”
“Besides food from the cafeteria? Um, frozen dinners.”
Devon blanched. “Those do not count as food.” He narrowed his eyes a little. “There is no way I’m letting you continue eating like that. Not that you can call it eating.”
“Well, that’s not all I live off of. I uh, have a friend that’s started bringing me food at work.” Garrett kissed Devon’s forehead. “He makes sure I eat well. And he’s really cute.” He grinned.
Devon blushed. “I-” He was cut off with a kiss. Garrett’s hands cupped Devon’s face. Devon pulled back for breath and smiled. “’Cute’?” He asked after a few minutes.
“Don’t like ‘cute’?” Garrett teased. “How about ‘adorable’?”
Devon laughed. “Would prefer ‘gorgeous’ or ‘sexy’… but…” he shrugged, “I could live with ‘adorable’.”
Garrett’s stomach gurgled. “Is it time for food now?”
Devon checked his watch. “Close enough.” He turned on the stove and placed a skillet on the burner. “Here.” He handed Garrett a spoon as he brushed some butter in the bottom of the skillet. “Spoon some of that in there.” Garrett did so and Devon tilted the pan around to coat the bottom in batter. After they made enough, Devon pulled some yogurt and berries out of the fridge. “Blueberries sound good?”
“Yeah.” Garrett grabbed a couple crepes and spooned yogurt and blueberries into them before rolling them up. He took the fork that Devon handed him and sat down at the table.
Devon dished up his own plate and sat next to Garrett. “So, what do you think?”
“They’re good.” Garrett took another bite, “I think I’ll keep you around.”
“Yeah?” Devon ate a few bites of his own crepes.”You work tonight?”
“No, I’m off tonight.” Garrett raised an eyebrow at the grin that crossed Devon’s face. “What’s that look for?”
“Nothing.” Devon focused his attention on the rest of his crepes.
“Right.” Garrett smirked and finished his food. Devon scooted his chair closer. Garrett glanced at Devon. Devon laid his head on Garrett’s shoulder and snuggled.”Visiting hours at the hospital begin in an hour. Did you want to stop by?”
“I probably should.” Devon nuzzled Garrett’s neck.
“I could drive you.” Garrett closed his eyes as Devon placed a light kiss to his jaw. “We have time.” He turned his head and kissed Devon. Devon slid a hand over Garrett’s bare stomach. Garrett shivered. He found Devon’s hand with his own and threaded their fingers together. Devon pulled back and looked at him. Garrett smiled. “Perhaps we should move to somewhere more comfortable?”
Devon sighed. “That would require moving. I’m comfy.”
Garrett stood and scooped Devon up into his arms. “Better?” Devon nodded. Garrett carried him down the hall to the bedroom and laid him on the bed. Devon splayed his hand on Garrett’s chest. Garrett looked down at him. “Everything okay?”
Devon sighed. “Just a bit soon. I-”
Garrett kissed him gently. “I’m not gonna push this.” He whispered as he lay down next to Devon. “Whenever you’re ready, I’m ready.”
“There was a time when I would’ve rushed into something, but…” Devon snuggled up to Garrett. “I mean… It’s not that I don’t… I just…”
Garrett lightly ran a hand up Devon’s arm. “It’s okay.” He kissed him and pulled him close. “Get some rest. You’ve had a long couple days.” Devon nodded and closed his eyes.
