Chapter 15

Speed lay curled up on the bed reading the used romance novel he had bought the day before.

“What are you reading?” Tony asked as he walked in. Speed held up the book so Tony could see the worn cover. “That doesn’t help. Title’s worn off.” He paused. “Is that one of those girly romance novels?”

Speed shifted a little. “Maybe.”

“Dude, you’re such a girl.” Speed went back to reading as Tony sat on the bed next to him. “So what’s it about?” Tony asked resting his chin on Speed’s shoulder.

Speed turned his head to look at Tony. “Girl gets kidnapped by pirates.”

“Is this Pirates of the Caribbean?” Tony asked. “I love Captain Jack.”

“No.” Speed blinked, pausing. “You don’t love Captain Jack more than me, right?”

“Of course not, Babe.”

Speed turned to look at the page in front of him, but stopped when he felt teeth on his shoulder. “Ow!” He pulled away and glared at Tony. “You bit me, jackass!” Tony just smiled at him. “What the Hell was that for?”

“You looked cute. I wanted a nibble.” Tony batted his eyes.

“You did just say ‘nibble,’ right?” Speed asked, an eyebrow raised.

“You have a dirty, dirty mind.” Tony leered.

“You complaining?” Speed smirked and went back to his book and Tony began reading over his shoulder.

“’Heaving bosoms’?” Tony raised his eyebrows. “You actually like reading this shit?”

“It’s not shit, Tony.”

“Really?” Tony snatched the book from Speed’s hands and started flipping pages.

“Hey!” Speed grabbed for the book, but Tony held it out of reach and jumped off the bed. “Give me that!”

“What are you willing to do for it?” Tony smiled, waving the book over Speed’s head.

Speed glared, crossing his arms over his chest. “I refuse to play your stupid little game.”

“You’re no fun.”

Speed held out his hand and narrowed his eyes. “Give me.” Tony handed the book back over. “Thank you.” Speed sat back down and began reading again.

Tony sprawled next to Speed on his back and laid his head on Speed’s lap. “Somebody is cranky today. What’s wrong?”

“I dunno.” Speed shrugged, still involved in his book.

“Everything okay?” Tony asked, reaching his hand over his head and wrapping his arms around Speed’s waist.

“I dunno.” Speed answered.

“That going to be your answer for everything today?” Tony leaned his head back to look at Speed.

Speed glared at him from between the pages of his book. “Smartass.”

“No, come on. Really.” Tony ran his hand in small circles over Speed’s lower back. “What’s going on?”

Speed sighed. “I think maybe I should be asking you that question.”

“What do you mean?” Tony asked, pausing in his lazy massage.

“I mean, Tony,” Speed stared down at him, “why do you keep disappearing from work?”

“I-” Tony started.

“And don’t tell me doctors’ appointments. Because we both know that’s not true.”

“Speed-” Tony began as his phone rang. He answered and shot an apologetic look at Speed. “Hey.” He smiled, standing and walking out to the living room. Speed heard Tony grab his car keys and walk out the door followed by the engine of Tony’s car turning over. He sighed and went back to reading.

McGee turned on Tony, Ziva, Speed and Sarah as they walked in. “Where have you been?!” He asked his sister.

“The library. I told you I had to study.” Sarah told her brother. “You know, Tony is much cuter than Tommy.” She supplied as the others pulled off their jackets.

“Tommy?” McGee inquired nervously, already not liking where the conversation was going.

Tony pulled a book from behind his back and held it up. “Hmm. You know if you rearrange these letters,” he ran his finger underneath the words ‘Thom E. Gemcity’ to point them out, “you get…”

“Timothy McGee!” Ziva finished with a smile as she Tony and Speed advanced on McGee.

Speed grinned. “It wasn’t too hard to figure out once your sister Sarah got us on the trail.” McGee looked at Sarah.

“You should have told me it was a secret.” She defended as she followed a few feet behind the others.

Tony opened the book and continued walking forward. “I can’t wait to read about your swashbuckling,” he looked up, “socially repugnant Special Agent Tommy.”

Ziva laughed a little as McGee looked at her. “And Lisa,” she tilted her head to the side, “the sultry and emotionally distant,” she looked at Tony, “Mossad Officer.”

“And Jim, the scruffy rebel with a soft spot for literature.” Speed grinned, a feral look in his eyes.

“Or their boss, L.J. Tibbs, who ‘drinks to alleviate the burden of his Messianic complex.’” Tony snapped the book shut and looked at McGee. “Where is L.J., Dead Agent Walking?” He asked.

McGee sighed. “Evidence garage.” Tony twirled the book in his hands with child-like glee as he backed out of the bullpen followed by Speed and Ziva. “Tony!” McGee warned. They kept walking. “Tony!” He stalked past them, grabbing his sister’s arm and pulling her along. “I’m gonna kill you.” He muttered to her through clenched teeth.

“Can you believe Probie, Speed?” Tony rested his chin on Speed’s shoulder as they curled up in Speed’s favorite easy chair to read McGee’s book.

“You mean Thom E. Gemcity?” Speed snickered a little. “Gotta hand it to him, though. Kid knows how to write.” He turned his head and looked at Tony. “He’s got you down pat.”

“What about you? The scruffy rebel?” Tony asked, slipping his arms around Speed’s waist.

“Yeah, he’s pretty much got me pegged.” Speed smirked.

“Hey.” Tony murmured as he nuzzled Speed’s ear. “Only one who gets to ‘peg’ you is me.”

Speed leveled a teasing glare at him. “Not how I meant it.” He smirked before immersing himself in the book again. Tony leaned his head against Speed’s so he head get a better view to read over his shoulder. Speed reached behind Tony’s head and began stroking his hair.

Tony smiled contentedly. “You really are a sap, you know that?” He pulled Speed partway onto his lap.

“Mmhmm.” Speed snuggled closer to Tony.

“So what’s happening in this book of McGeek’s?” Tony asked, squinting a little at the words on the page.

“Special Agent Jim Steele is in a car chase with the suspect.” Speed explained.

Tony frowned. “When were you in a car chase?”

“You know, not everything in this book has actually happened.” Speed muttered. “Or are you still chasing ‘any skirt over the age of 18’?”

“Point taken.” Tony rested a hand on Speed’s hip and unconsciously made little circles with his thumb.

Speed smiled to himself. “Would it be easier if I read this to you?”

“I can read just fine.” Tony snapped, a little harsher than he had meant to.

Speed frowned slightly. “I just meant so you didn’t have to read over my shoulder or coordinating page turns.”

“Right.” Tony murmured awkwardly. He gently pulled Speed closer. “Yeah… I’d like that…” He smiled. Speed flipped back to the beginning (they were only five pages in), curled up on Tony’s lap and started reading out loud.
