Chapter 14
Speed was sitting at his desk listening to Tony giving Ziva a hard time.
“I don’t do Halloween because ever since I became a cop, weird things always happen on October thirty-first.” Tony explained to his coworker. Speed chuckled to himself.
“Define weird.” Ziva demanded in a whisper.
Tony stood and began to cross to Ziva’s desk to pick up the balls of paper he’d been playing trash can basketball with. “Grave robberies, beheadings, cattle mutilations.” Tony paused as McGee walked into the room buttoning his shirt. “And McGee turning fuzzy and blue.” He started over towards McGee’s desk. Speed looked up and stood to find out what Tony meant.
“What?” McGee asked, startled to suddenly be the subject of the conversation.
“What’s under your shirt?” Ziva asked with a smirk.
McGee looked between Ziva and Tony, hoping his attempt to be invisible was working. “My t-shirt.”
“Okay, he’s lying.” Ziva smiled.
“Oh yeah.” Tony looked down and found an orange bag by McGee’s trash can. “Oh yeah.” He laughed as he snatched it up with a joyous sigh before McGee could grab it. Speed stepped around the partition, curiosity getting the better of him. Tony tossed a pointy-eared, fuzzy, blue hat to Ziva who placed it on her head. “I knew you played a fairy on that online game, but dressing up as one?”
McGee sighed. “It’s a Snow Elf,” he said over the rusting of Tony rummaging through the bag, “and I’m going to a costume party, okay?” Ziva checked her reflection in her square hand mirror.
Tony pulled two fuzzy, curly-toed slippers out of the bag and wore them on his hands. “It’s far from okay, Prob-ay.” He looked at his slippered hands in something that was akin to disgust and Speed snickered. “In fact, I’d say that this in taking geek one step beyond.”
“Oh,” Ziva patted the hat on her head, “sadly I have to agree.” She chuckled. “I instantly felt all the respect leave my body as soon as I put this on.” Tony raised an eyebrow when she started laughing in a way that could only have been described as Ziva giggling.
“Well, normally, you’d be right,” McGee smirked, “but you haven’t yet met my Ice Queen.” He beckoned them over to his desk. They gathered around as McGee began typing on his keyboard.
“You have to be kidding me.” Tony chuckled. Speed poked at the hat on Ziva’s head.
McGee brought a picture of a very attractive woman up onto his screen. “Did I also mention she’s a Redskins cheerleader?” Speed raised an eyebrow and smiled.
Ziva nodded in appreciation. “Hm, very impressive.”
“That is a very hot woman.” Tony looked at McGee, confused. “How did you find her?” He looked back at the screen.
“I met her at the Armani store.” McGee stated nonchalantly. “Found out we played on the same gaming server together.”
Tony narrowed his eyes at McGee. “Since when can you afford Armani?” He poked around at McGee’s jacket, inspecting it with his still slippered hands. Speed snickered and turned to go back to his desk.
“Gear up!” Gibbs swept into the room, doing a double take at his team, standing around in their respective fuzzy blue costume pieces. Tony had quickly managed to hide his hands by crossing his arms and sticking his hands in his armpits.
Ziva stood as if nothing was wrong as Gibbs looked her up and down. “Oh, God.” She whipped the hat off of her head and tossed it on McGee’s desk. “They’re McGee’s.” She smoothed a hand over her French braid.
McGee stammered a little. “Well, I’m going to a costume party later.”
Gibbs nodded, completely unfazed, and turned to cross over to his desk. “Not anymore, Elf Lord.” Gibbs pressed a few keys on his keyboard. “General Custer has been shot, and he’s got a dead skeleton in his living room.”
Tony turned to Ziva. “What’d I tell you? Halloween.” He said, raising an eyebrow and tipping his head at her.

The team looked up as Ducky’s van, covered in eggs stopped in front of them.
“What happened to them?” Ziva asked, mildly horrified.
“Halloween.” Tony and Speed said; Tony with disgusted look on his face, and Speed with a grin on his.
Ducky and Palmer climbed out of the van. “Sorry we’re late,” Ducky apologized and pointed to the windshield, “only we had a minor run-in with some local youths.
Gibbs stared at the sight as if it was nothing out of the ordinary. “Yeah, I can see that, Doctor.”
McGee looked at Ducky, a worried expression on his face. “Did you get a good look at them?”
“Oh, we did better than that.” Ducky turned around to face the sliding door of the van. “Release the captives, Mr. Palmer!” Palmer opened the doors and two young guys dressed up as ninjas looked up. Speed couldn’t help but let out a little chuckle.
“Are we in trouble?” The first one asked as he was pulled out of the van.
The second one followed behind him.“Ah, where we at?”
“We said we were sorry.” The first snarked.
“Right.” Ducky handed them a roll of paper towels and a bottle of windex. “Clean it!” The two ninjas looked at each other and grumbled.
“Nice work, Palmer!” Tony congratulated as he turned to head for the crime scene.
“It wasn’t me, Tony.” Palmer corrected gesturing with his thumb toward Ducky. “Doctor Mallard chased them for three blocks.”
Speed raised his eyebrows. “Really?”
“Oh, please.” Ducky dismissed as he grabbed his examination kits out of the van. “It’s not that impressive.” He followed the team inside. “It’s not as if they were real ninjas.” Speed laughed and patted Ducky on the shoulder.

“Look, I know what I saw.” McGee explained. “Someone policed the brass - tried to wipe up the blood.”
“Who, Probie?” Tony asked crankily. “The crime scene fairies? There’s no one here.”
Speed looked up from his camera. “Those crime scene fairies are bastards.” He grinned.
“Get Ducky in here.” Gibbs told Tony, who went outside to fetch the mention medical examiner. “We’re wasting time.”
“Boss, I’m sorry, but I swear there-” McGee started.
“What do you make of this, McGee?” Gibbs asked sweeping his arms to indicate the room.
“Well, obvious signs of a struggle. One dead assailant. Not sure how his head got that way, though.” McGee looked at Gibbs.
“You’re not?” Gibbs asked. “Come on,” he waved his hands at McGee, beckoning him the two foot distance, “let me show you.” He grabbed the front of McGee’s jacket. “Get on the floor.”Speed raised an eyebrow.
McGee looked down at his boss’ hands nervously as Gibbs maneuvered him to the floor. “Well, Tony did tell me about when you demonstrated this technique.” Speed watched with interest as Gibbs straddled McGee.
“Yeah, you guys talk about things like that?”You learn by feeling, McGee.” He wrapped his arm around the back of McGee’s neck and placed his other hand on the opposite cheek. “This is how Marines silence enemy sentries. “Sixty-six pounds of pressure and then-”He snapped McGee’s head around, McGee’s eye wide in shock. Speed jumped. “-snap!”
“So Staff Sergeant Niles went down fighting.” McGee stated, his voiced muffled and shaking.
“See?” Gibbs asked, bending down at looking in the same place as McGee’s current line of vision, and pointed with his gloved fingers. “The blood spatter on the wall.” Gibbs stood and walked over to the dead body that was dressed as a skeleton. He bent down next to the body. “He was right about where I am now when he got shot.” He explained as McGee got up and walked over, and he put his finger tips on his own neck. “Bullet impacted.” He lowered his hand and went to the other side of the room as Ducky walked in. “It means the shooter was over here somewhere.” He said.
“This is where the brass is-”McGee pointed, “well, was.” He looked at his boss. “So two assailants?”
“At least.” Gibbs stated.
Ducky looked down at the body. “Yes, the cause of death is pretty obvious.” He knelt down. “But you never know. I once had a case where a man who died of heart failure had an ice pick plunged into his skull four hours after the time of death.” He looked at Palmer who had squatted next to him. “His wife discovered that she had been left out of his will.”
“Good news, Boss.” Tony said as he reentered the scene. “Kids saw a car leaving the Sergeant’s house around the time of the shooting. Ziva’s getting a description.” He looked around the floor.
“Yes, well, let’s have a look at you.” Ducky said as he righted the body’s head.
Everyone jumped when Tony suddenly shouted. “Something just touched my foot.” He spoke quietly, hands out protecting his personal space. “Something’s under the couch.”
“Maybe it’s the, uh, crime scene fairy, Tony.” McGee stated with a small smile. Speed snickered into his elbow.
Tony looked over his shoulder at them. “Shush!” He pointed at Mcgee. “I hate Halloween.” He muttered as he bent down to look under the couch. Pulling up the fabric at the bottom of the couch and peered around before jumping up with another shout. Speed watched the little robot emerge from under the couch and snickered, taking a picture of the look on Tony’s face. Tony stuck his tongue out and narrowed his eyes at him.
“Hey, it’s a Roomba.” McGee announced, with a smile. “It’s a robot vacuum cleaner. Uses navigational sensors to clean the floor while the owner’s away.” He watched the Roomba roll across the floor as Gibbs walked beside it.
“Yes, well your Roomba is about to interfere with your crime scene.”Ducky pointed out as the Roomba passed evidence marker 3.
Gibbs brought his boot down on it and smashed it open. “Damn thing policed the brass.” He said as he bent down and picked up a shell casing.
“Told you I wasn’t crazy.” McGee remarked to Tony who straightened the front of his jacket.
Gibbs stood and dropped the casing into McGee’s gloved hand. “Bag it.” He barked and walked outside. Speed patted Tony’s shoulder.

McGee, Tony and Speed walked into Abby’s lab and stopped short. They looked her up and down as she swayed with her back to them in her white Marilyn Monroe dress and blond wig. McGee stood staring with his mouth agape. Tony received a headslap from Speed and flinched a little. He smacked him in the chest with the back of his hand in response.
Abby spun to face them, making her dress float around her legs. “Oh, sorry I was late, you guys.” She apologized, her hands out to her sides in surrender. “I couldn’t hear my cell phone ringing at the party. You’d think a cemetery would be a little quieter. It’s awful about that little girl! I mean, getting kidnapped on Halloween. Totally creepy.” She turned back to her computer and began typing. “I’m running our skeleton’s fingerprints through AFIS. I’m starting with Virginia and Maryland,” McGee raised his camera and snapped a photo of Abby’s back, “and then a subset of all known child molesters on the east coast. I’ve got an Amber Alert running, not hits yet.” She turned around and leaned one arms against her computer table. “We’ve got to find her.” Abby paused slightly. “Why are you looking at me like that? Do I have food stuck in my teeth or something?”
Tony chuckled nervously. “No, uh… I’ll just go with or something.” he stated as he, McGee and Speed walked toward her. He was rewarded with Speed’s elbow to his ribs. “We need to run our dead guy’s photo against mug shots.” They stood, staring as Abby waited expectantly.
She looked McGee up and down. “Give me.” McGee just stared.
Tony turned to him and slapped him on the back of the head. “The camera, McGeek.”
McGee nodded, momentarily broken out of his trance. “The camera, sorry.” He handed said camera over to Abby who took it and hooked it up to her computer.
“We need to put out a BOLO. See if anyone recognizes our guy.” Tony informed her.
Abby turned to McGee who had started staring at her again. “McGee, what is wrong with you? You look three cans short of a six-pack.” Speed tried to hold back a snicker and failed.
“Nothing.” McGee stammered. “It’s just… you look different.” He smiled a dorky smile.
“He means the Halloween costume, Marilyn.” Tony pointed out, as he looked her over again.
Abby looked down at herself. “Oh, right!” She turned her attention back to the computer screen. “Sweet, huh?”
“Yeah.” The three men replied, Speed slipping his arm around Tony’s waist.
Tony’s phone rang and he answered it. “DiNozzo.”
“Woodbridge P.D. has a kid who says he may have seen a Sebring in the neighborhood.” Gibbs informed him.
“Okay, on it.” Tony leaned against the computer table. “We also got a picture of our skeleton without makeup.”
“Send them. I’ll see if I can get the wife to ID him. What’s the condition of the Staff Sergeant?” Gibbs asked.
“He’s still in surgery. According to the doctors, we won’t be able to interview him until tomorrow.” Tony glanced at the rest of the team that was gathered.
“Tomorrow’s too late.”
“Yeah, Kidnappers call back yet?” Tony scratched back of his head.
“Nope. It makes me wonder.”
“If she’s still alive?” Tony asked, letting Speed rest his chin on his shoulder.
“No. What they want with an enlisted Marine who makes less than thirty-two thousand dollars… a year.”
“Yeah, I was kind of wondering the same thing.” Tony sighed into his phone.
“Find out.” Gibbs hung up.

Gibbs, McGee, Tony and Speed burst in to the suspected apartment with their guns drawn.
“Federal Agents!” Gibbs shouted at the crowd of Halloween partygoers.
A man dressed as a giant carrot laughed and began clapping. “Yeah, all right.” The room burst into applause and the four agents looked as a giant prop spider drop down to a few feet above their head and the carrot man took a picture of them. “Great group costume, guys, but you spelled ‘CSI’ wrong on your hats.” Speed snorted and laughed, McGee thumping him on the back lightly.
Gibbs holstered his weapon. “Robert Miller.” he demanded.
“Somebody’s in a bad mood.” Carrot man stated right before Gibbs grabbed him and got up in his face. “Right over there by the blue alien ladies.” He pointed. Gibbs let him go and headed to where the carrot man had directed him.
“It’s not easy being a root vegetable, is it?” Tony asked, more to Speed than to the man dressed as the carrot, before the two of them and McGee followed Gibbs.
“Robert Miller.” Gibbs stated to the blue alien ladies.
“Hab Sosli’ guch!” The Klingon remarked.
“Boss,” McGee piped up, “he just said, ‘Your mother has a smooth forehead.’ It’s a Klingon insult.” The others turned and looked at him.
“You speak Klingon?” Speed and Tony asked.
“Not fluently, but yes.” McGee replied, knowing the amount of teasing he would be getting in the future from that alone.
Gibbs held up his badge. “Federal agents.”
“Zeghbe Thlinganpu!” The Klingon held up his bat’leth, aiming at Gibbs.
“Now he’s saying ‘Klingons don’t surrender.’” McGee translated.
Gibbs shoved the Klingon into the space where the wall meets the floor. “Are you Robert Miller?”
“Who are you people.” The pinned Klingon asked. Gibbs pulled him up. “Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!” He panicked a little.
Gibbs closed the distance and glared. “Sarah Niles! Where is she?”
_+_+_+_+_
“Stop!” Gibbs pulled Laura Niles away from the woman she was kicking.
“All they wanted was the stupid money!” Laura screamed.
“Gun!” McGee yelled, when Laura’s sister’s bag fell over. He secured the weapon as Tony and Ziva brought little Sarah Niles into the hall.
“Sarah!” Laura cried.
Sarah ran towards her mother. “Mommy!” The two met half way and Laura scooped her daughter into her arms.
“Oh, Baby! I missed you so much! Are you okay?”
“Apparently she doesn’t have a sister.” Gibbs explained as Tony and Ziva walked up and McGee handcuffed the woman they had assumed was Laura, Niles sister.
“Halloween, Ziva. Be glad only happens once a year.” Tony stated, watching McGee haul the now mystery woman off the floor.

“The sky is blue, the grass is green. May we have our Halloween?” Ducky recited as he placed a candy in Sarah Niles’ plastic pumpkin bucket. “That’s how we used to say ‘trick-or-treat’ in Scotland.”
“Thank you.” Sarah smiled.
“You’re most welcome, your highness.” Ducky gave a little bow and Sarah curtsied.
Abby, still in her Marilyn costume, took Sarah’s hand. “We have a lot of desks to get to.” She sing-songed and she and Ducky led Sarah over to another area of the main bullpen to collect more candy.
“You didn’t have to do this.” Laura Niles shook her head with a smile.
Tony smiled, leaning against the partition. “Well, every kid deserves a happy Halloween.”
“Trick-or-treat!” They heard Sarah call to one of the other agents.
“Your husband is awake and asking for you and his daughter.” Ziva stated as she and McGee walked up from the elevator.
“There’s a car waiting for you when you’re ready.” McGee added.
Relief washed over Laura’s face. “Please let Agent Gibbs know how much I appreciate him keeping his word. And that I’m sorry I lied to him. I was… I was just trying to protect…”
“Trust me, he knows.” Tony interrupted gently. Laura smiled and walked over to collect her daughter.
“Look at this!” Sarah exclaimed with a giggle.
Speed used resting his arm along the top of the partition as an excuse to have his arm around Tony. “She’s cute.” He said, indicating Sarah with a nod.
Tony placed his hand on Speed’s shoulder. “Yeah, she is.”
Speed leaned closer. “Let’s go home,” He whispered, “and you can scare the bejesus out of trick-or-treaters.” Tony grinned.
