A deep enough cut on the throat in the right area could probably take out the vocal cords, but might not be survivable without immediate modern medical care. Judging from the names, that's probably not the case, so might I suggest cutting out the tongue instead?

How about if theres some freakish magic involved? The world isnt exactly here-modern, but that doesnt mean they don't have ways of treating medical emergencies. I do need to research that a bit though. my friend suggested the tounge, too. I just worry about the issues of like, eating. and swallowing. and how that might hamper living ^^; Its supposed to be a bothced assassination attempt....idk. i need to work it out a bit better.

Freakish magic makes everything work! And don't worry, your character will still be able to eat. The vocal cords are located below the epiglottis, within the trachea, which is that hard thing in the front of the neck. The digestive track is behind it, hence the need for the epiglottis in the first place. So as long as it doesn't get through the other side of the tracheal tube you'll probably be fine.

This info is bound to be highly useful in arguments with Intelligent Design cultists, because that set up is not intelligent at all.
