Samantha finally gets up because she has to pee. Miles confronts her, explaining that he sent their daughter to his parents' place just so he could settle things. Ugh...
This is typical Rowling all over. Spend 300 pages setting up an argument, then pay it off so late into the story that it barely matters anymore.

I think you nail this pretty well, actually. Rowling doesn't seem to know how to give reader payoffs at all. This was glaringly obvious in Harry Potter, but it still comes through here.

Well, Rowling is a former smoker and you've testified that you hate smoking, so I'd take her word for it.
