Maple Syrup and Unrequited Love: Prologue
A/N: I wasn't really expecting to turn this into an actual fan fic, but this plot bunny has been bugging me for a while now...and recently, I've had a strange craving for some Prussia x Canada action and...well, this was the end result...
Warnings: Shounen ai (boy x boy relationships), lots of swearing, dark themes, and OOCness…(coming from a very depressed Gilbert)

Gilbert Beilschmidt was a dead man. The twenty year old stood motionless against the railing of the apartment roof as he gazed distantly into the city. Everything had gone wrong. Everything. His whole entire life was a mistake, a damed imbecile the world was better off without. After all, he was all alone.
The young man was nothing but a ghost, a mere shadow of the great person he once was. There was a time he had everything. A successful job, great friends, and everybody worshiped his awesome self. And almost in an instant flash, it was all gone. He had lost it all…
.....
It all started when his stupid, un-awesome boss, Ivan Braginski decided to fire him- the Great Gilbert Beilschmidt of all people.
"I am afraid I have to let you go. I have too many complaints of harassment from your coworkers, especially Roderich Edelstein. You understand, da?" the creepy Russian told him.
After losing his job and income, Gilbert was forced to live in his younger brother, Ludwig's house.
"Drink, drink, drink - That's all you ever do! Get your lazy ass up and work, for Christ sake!"
The little brat had the nerve to tell him what to do.
"Go fuck yourself, you uptight bastard. I'll do whatever I want!" he yelled back.
Everyday was like this. The house was a war zone…bickering and fighting between the two brothers.
After all the torment, he thought he could find some relief in his friends. Gilbert had two good buddies in high school. He, Francis and Antonio had survived the miserable place together. They were the only people that understood him, or at least that's what he thought.
"Ah, lo siento, Gilbert. I can't go drinking with you today. I promised to spend the afternoon with Lovi~" Antonio cooed.
More and more, he would get this response. They were either too busy fucking some stupid girl or guy they picked up or working….too busy to spend time with the awesome Gilbert Beilschmidt. Slowly and surely, they had abandoned him as well.
…And then came the final straw. If there was anyone Gilbert loved more than the world, it was Elizabeta Héderváry. He had known her since childhood. She was awesome and not to mention damn sexy as well- everything he could ever ask for in a girl. Gilbert knew he was in love the moment he saw her.
…And it was only last week he had summoned the courage to tell her how he felt.
He managed to catch her just as she was heading out. Pulling out a box of chocolates, Gilbert nervously approached her.
"Umm E-eliza, you know all the times I've made you mad and pulled your hair and stuff just to annoy you…W-well, I never meant any of it…A-all this time, I've always…a-always l-loved you," He mumbled nervously.
The brunette girl looked at him for a moment before softening her gaze. "I'm sorry, Gilbert. It was very nice of you to say all that, but I'm already seeing someone else. Please understand," she solemnly replied.
"Y-yeah. I suppose it can't be helped,"
And it wasn't just anyone she was seeing, he found out later that day it was Roderich Edelstein.
Gilbert Beilschmidt fumed. He loathed that man with every fiber of his body. Everything he ever had and wanted was snatched right out of his hand by Roderich.
That bastard had everything he could only dream of…Everyone loved that stupid piano playing pussy more than him. First, Roderich stole his spotlight, and next his job, and finally the love of his life.
"Oh Roddy, you're so smart,"
"Roderich, you sure are a talented young man,"
"Mr. Edelstein, you are quite mature beyond your years. I see a bright future for you,"
All those praises that stupid bastard received…all those praises Gilbert wished people would say to him instead…it made him sick…
He hated everyone. He hated Ivan, he hated Ludwig, he hated Antonio, he hated Francis, he hated Elizabeta, and most of all he hated Roderich.
.....
Gilbert slowly slipped his legs over the railing…silver hair softly waved in the wind and tired red eyes heavy with years and years of baggage…
Taking a deep breath, he watched the scene below. Cars zoomed quickly on the narrow street trying to reach their destination…Countless people together, laughing and having a good time. They all looked like little dots from this height.
He chuckled bitterly. The street below was welcoming him, warmly beckoning him to come over. It would be his escape. He would be able to get away from it all, this miserable and pointless life he put up with for the last twenty years. Yes, the ground was his friend. It would embrace him kindly and he would finally have some peace in his life.
Gilbert smiled, just as he was about to let go of the railing…
