I woke up this morning immensely relieved that my guy won and still very excited and impressed that the U.S. made such a huge step forward in race relations. As is my inclination, though, I started worrying.
There was almost no detectable third party suppot in a country that badly needs more political parties to broaden the range of political debate. (I often complain the the Democratic party is just a right wing party and that we need a real liberal party in the U.S. but after watching Bush trample on civil liberties, expand the government and spend like a drunken sailor, I know that many libertarians and conservatives think the U.S. needs a real conservative party.)
It appears that Alaska has re-elected a recently convicted felon (who believes the internet is a bunch of tubes) to the Senate
Various anti-gay ballot measures won.
The U.S. has elected a man to the presidency who:
-opposes mandated health care and single payer health care
-has voted several times for war funding for Iraq
-supports the death penalty
-opposes same sex marriage
-believes the Constitution confers an individual right to bear arms.
-supported FISA extensions/amendments granting immunity to telecoms
-won't revoke the trade embargo with Cuba
-is willing to engage in unilateral attacks and is uninterested in decreasing military spending
UPDATE: edited 'Democrat party is just a right party' --> 'Democratic party is just a right wing party'
