I don' think there is anything wrong with self promotion. I love getting people to read my stuff ;-)

While I love getting people to read my stuff, if I'm recommending something, I prefer to give them the stuff I like. Don't ask me why but I guess I'm scared that they'll think I'm secretly 'OMG, PLEAZE READ MY STUFF!' and I really don't want them to think that.

okay, cool. so if someone says "feel free to self promote" do you think you would be more willing?

perhaps that's the issue. it's not so much that the fic searches dislike people reccing themselves, it's that they know a lot of people WON'T unless it is specifically stated.

I don't mind self promoting to my flist but to people I just randomly come across or friends of friends, I feel wary about it. I don't know why. I guess it's this strange insecurity streak that runs in me and always makes me fear rejection. Is that a logical line of thought? Not really. Does it make sense to me? Sort of. *shrugs*

That makes perfect sense. I'm also somebody who would be less inclined to rec myself.

How would you feel if someone said "you might like this, I wrote it"? Would you be disinclined to read it if you didn't know the author? Or because it wasn't actually recced by a reader and a fan of it?

Hmm, I'm getting all curious-y now. I wonder if this has been polled before?
