I really don't get it.
The fear of paying performers, I really don't.
Especially when it come from other performers.

Granted, I don't always get paid. Sometimes i take a cut of the show. Sometimes, four times a year even, I dance for free, at a charity event. I even just booked one, right this very moment ago, and I'm super excited about it, as 100% ( Read more... )

Good lord.

Whenever people ask to book a show for that insane kind of amount of time, I always want to ask them, "have YOU ever watched a bellydancer for a whole hour?" Because, seriously. Even broken up, that is what is called, technically, a shitload of dance.

I wish the general public could understand that things like professional-quality art, performances, and writing require at least as much work as professional anything else (legal representation, being a CPA, an RN, or an engineer, for example). WTF, people. Honestly. You don't go to the grocery store and get offended when you're asked to pay for your purchases! Goods and services are commodities. D-U-H. [shakes head]

orrin says that a lot of the problem in the writing community is the number of people who are willing to give it away for free because they either don't know any better or they think it is more important to "be out there" than to be able to live.

I'm glad people like you and him do what you do, and I'm also glad I didn't pursue your respective vocations. Because I'd be in jail for assault, if not murder.
