I was really surprised when i saw a couple of Pizza Hut oulets in Lyon yesterday. I mean, who would eat Pizza Hut pizza when you can eat the real authentic stuff from any of the numerous pizzeria's in every other street !

American tourists? :P

No but actually American pizza is slightly different from Italian pizza. So it's not the same thing they're selling really.

Slightly ?? it is very very different. And much inferior to the real italian stuff. I know its not the same thing, what i am wondering is why anyone would choose american pizza over the italian one

Oh vegetarians for one prefer American pizza. That's cause the can't have pizza with any toppings - and they have the lowest end pizza with only the crust, cheese and tomato sauce. Now in Italy, with the thin crust, less cheese and without the complete smothering of tomato sauce, there's nothing for the veggies to eat.
So they go for the fat crust + loaded with cheese and tomato sauce American pizza.

Also, a lot of Americans like their pizza thick and cheesy (;)). I had pizza in this Chicago restaurant which is sooooooooooooooooooo famous for its double layered deep dish pizza. I didn't think much of it buy it's actually been voted as best pizza in America etc!!

Veggies not being able to have any topping is bullshit. in germany, for example, you could have atleast 3-4 different type of veggie only pizzas. I am sure similiar is the case here in france though (i was able to read german but no french so thats why not sure)

And well, maybe some restaraunt in chicago sells good american pizza, but the stuff turned out by pizza hut / domino's etc gets their backside kicked by any local pizzeria here.

Well, Pizza Hut in Brussels had an 'all you can eat lunch' for 7 Euroes.

And there was this tiny little place I went to in Naples, which LP describes as 'arguably the world's bezt pizzeria'. Very very very very good. After I came back from exchange, took me almost a year to get back to eating pizzas though...I missed the thin crust ones.

But as for why people would prefer American pizza to Italian pizza - it's really individual taste. And also because these Americans are crazy!!
