Gone completely Potter.

I really don't understand the obsession with blasting through the new Harry Potter book.  Yes, it just came out and that's all exciting, but my friends' page and virtually everywhere else I turn is bombarded with posts about how people read it in 12 hours, or didn't sleep for two days to finish it or whatever.  It's a book.  It will wait.  Of ( Read more... )

Ah, I've been trying to explain this to people all week. You're right - it's just a book. If all I wanted to know was how the series ended, I'd be much less worked up about reading it the instant it hit stores. But the thing about Harry Potter is that it's a mass cultural event, which makes the timing important. Think about it this way: why is it fun to watch the Super Bowl? Because millions of other people are doing it at the same time, and you can all yak about it the next day. If you taped it and watched it on your own a week later, especially if all the pertinent details about the game had already been revealed, it'd be a heck of a lot less fun.

I'm reading it quickly for the same reason I read all my other books quickly...I want to know how the story goes, where each thread leads. It's hard to put down a book when I'm THAT engrossed in it.

Still, to each their own =)

I like owning books. It's like owning DVDs. As silly as it sounds, I want other people to see my books and want to borrow them and read them. I wand my kids to read the books I've read. As for the 12 hours...I just couldn't put it down. Plus, I didn't want the distraction to continue all week...just wanted to read it and be done with it.
