United No Way

The hard sell, it is on: we are being bombarded on all sides with requests, nay, demands to donate money to United Way. I estimate I have received no less than five emails from a Company Q bigwig exhorting us to attend near-daily lunchtime United Way informational meetings. Every available surface around the office bristles with United Way ( Read more... )

Just send them this about the investigation in the UW president's fraud investigation:

and this where he's indicted

and here where he begins his sentence

That's why I won't give to those rotten bastards.

Last year we had the hard sell, with two CEO's on Loan or whatever they like to call their shills. This year the other branch on our floor is going great guns for it, but our side is kind of "eh...". There are posters on the bathroom doors and entry to the lunchroom, and of course we all got a packet in our in basket. We're lucky because our office administrator doesn't like them either, and totally agrees that they don't have the best charities aligned with them to donate to, and the overhead sucks. Why wouldn't we allow donations directly to whoever we want and cut out the middleman?

ITA. The only reason United Way is so successful is that they put pressure on the CEOs who put pressure on employees. The overhead is too high!

Not to mention the lack of pet / senior citizen or other types of charities to donate to, so the childfree have no palatable choice when donating through them. SURE you can specify whatever personal charity you prefer if you have their Tax ID, but in order to have the United Way process that for you the donation has to be $1,000 or more.

We had this at one of my employers as well.

The UW coupled with the "needy family Christmas gift grab", I had to decline both.

I just told them, look. I have my own charities that mean a lot me and I cannot justify donating to every single charity out there.

I ONLY donate to MY favourite charities. 'Nough said.

Another one that annoys me is The Children's Wish Foundation. It has broadened its spectrum to include "critically ill" as opposed to "terminally ill" children. Therefore, they have more money than they know what to do with. The last time one of their shills called I used a line from someone on ASCF: "I do not support charities that discriminate on the basis of age."

My money goes to the local no kill animal shelter.
