If you aren't already invested in Apple and iTunes stuff, and don't necessarily care about the iTunes website, consider something less proprietary. I use a Creative Labs MuVoTX, which runs on a AAA battery for about 16 hours of playback and requires no software to use since it is a USB thumb drive as well as an MP3 player. The 1 GB version is about $70 these days. It also has a display, which the shuffle does not, so you can see what's playing and skip tracks and folders easily. It is the size of a cigarette lighter and weighs about 1.3 oz with battery. Very functional design and I've been enjoying mine immensely. It will also let you record sounds via the built in mic. Some people use theirs to record lectures at school. And the FM receiver works reasonably well, including a preset station scan and search modes. You'd probably get all kinds of radio there. Just my 2 cents.

Too late. I already dropped a load of cash at Amazon for the total iPod Shuffle package. Armband, earbud headphones upgrade, everything. Should be here next week.

Well, enjoy it. Make sure that when you record your CD's that you do so to MP3 format rather than .AAC. Apple's format could force you to have to re-record them in a few years, which will annoy you. MP3's don't have an expiration date or a limit of how many PC's you can associate them with. And the Shuffle will cheerfully play MP3's. Btw, with MP3's there are tradeoffs. If you record at the standard of 128kpbs resolution it will sound like a cassette tape quality. If you record at 160 kbps or 192, the sound will be better. If you're after higher quality 256 kbps is the best you can reasonably hear for treble response, such as the human voice. When you want to have a good opera recording, highest quality is key. I also recommend that for any sopranos or you'll miss the overtones of her voice and it will sound flat. Hope you enjoy it. MP3 players are really wonderful. :) That is one piece of post-Oil technology I think we'll keep running. They require so little power to run and allow us to maintain key parts of our civilization.
