Art - Gandalf and Saruman

Sooo.... first time trying new pencils. Not too happy with some parts, kinda proud of others, these Prismacolors everyone's so praising have their advantages, but also rather severe limitations. I don't think they will replace Polychromos and even Pablos for me ( Read more... )

Wow! This is lovely! I like the shading, the vibrancy of the colours, the play of light and shadow. And your lovely piece of art made me want to go and dig out my tolkiens again... you rock! Thank you!

I'm always surprise over and over again how much I love Gandalf - he's so awesomely snarky and funny and knows how to kick ass!

Thank you!

The faces are especially nice. The beards are great. I always have a heck of a time drawing beards! The robes are very nice and, as always, I enjoy the background details. Nothing is lacking.

Hahaha, everyone comments on the faces, I think it paid of to use some kind of reference once in my life :D

I had a hard time with the beards too - I was never quite sure how the hair should fall... and where it starts growing, too. You'd think that with my dead who wears a short full beard I'd know, but somehow beards are a mystery :D

Thank you :) I'm glad you enjoyed this!

Speaking of using references.....I just have to know....do you use references when drawing furniture and backgrounds? Or is it more of an indirect reference. You know, sort of taking different images in your mind and bringing them together?

Beards: I have one and they are still a mystery to me. I'm also fascinated by the patterns in men's chest/stomach hair. On each side of my chest I have a swirl pattern in the hair. I have seen it on other guys. I'm not sure why that amazes me.

:D Truly, the pleasure was all mine.

Sometimes, if I know beforehand that I'll be drawing some specific object, I'll look up some references. But usually, I just use stuff I've seen before or my own furniture.

Oooooh! It turned out very nicely! I really like their faces, and the robes! All that fabric! The bench that Gandalf is sitting on is fabulous too - the shading in the wood, the grain, the curves. :-) So pretty.

Thank you very much! I really like drawing robes, I think I'll do more of dear Gandalf ;) I'm not quite satisfied with his face, yet.
