The ball felt solid and heavy in his hand. His thumb traced the curved, oversewn seams of leather as he stared at the dusty churchyard with abstract eyes.
The sun beat down on the parched patch, harsh light blurred by clouds of dust rising from children’s feet as they scampered around, drawing a baseball triangle with their sticks. Their laughter, mingled by Carrie’s gentle, firm voice instructing them to please be careful, was the only music in the lonely desert church that day-breaking his reverie.
Fou picked up a worn leather mitt lying on the ground.
“Let’s play ball!”

Once a week, he sets aside his violin and bow, ushers the orphans and Carrie out of the rooms, and strips down the curtains and bedsheets heavy with grime, child’s snot and dust. It takes him two to three trips to the laundry room.
Scrubbing the sheets, soaking his arms in warm soapy water. This is the only time Fou feels successful in battling against stains. Try as he would, he knows he can never succeed in removing his own human stain.
