I don't like Ginny as a character at all. I find her immensely irritating. But this slut business is more irritating. I mean for goodness sake, she's a teenaged girl! Should she be wearing a chastity belt or something?
4. Authorial Intent is a non-existent concept. What matters is MY opinion because I know better than the silly old author/creator. I have to debate this one. I'm not saying it doesn't matter what an author intends, but... if they haven't communicated it in their writing, then it's kind of beside the point. On the other hand, if they have communicated it, but a fanbrat decides to ignore it, then that's a different matter altogether. :)
Well, I'm not really speaking to how well an author communicates their intentions - that's pretty subjective, you know? Some people think that Harry/Ginny came out of nowhere, yet I saw it coming from book 2. Does that mean my awesome reading skillz are better? Hell no. (I didn't see Remus/Tonks, but others did. Hell, when I read the books, I didn't even see Remus/Sirius. *g*) People do see different things. Always. With most books. That's part of the fun in fandom, really.
It's the latter that you mentioned - when people choose to ignore it because they don't like it - that I meant.

We all saw Harry/Ginny coming from ten years away (and anyone who says differently is willfully deluding herself, if I may be so gauche as to conform to one of your rules); we just hoped that JKR would turn out to be a better writer than that. Obviously we were wrong.
It's just more convenient to call her a slut than to actually criticize JKR for anything so mundane as writing a horribly predictable teen romance featuring a Mary Sue in the most reprehensible sense of the word (because that would be wrong and might generate wank!). The argument is much shorter, because the Ginny!fanciers get so upset, and the Ginny!h8ers get to be all ^_^ because they reduced the opposing camp to silent, quivering rage with a single sentence

Well, I can't deny the entertainment value. Of course it's entertaining. Look at how much mileage the term "delusional" has gotten and continues to get. For wank purposes, it's pure gold.
Really though, what I'm poking fun at is the definition of slut that gets bandied about, and the utter seriousness with which some people speak it - and believe it. I'm sure you see it - probably more than I do. That's what boggles me.
Not that anyone hates Ginny (or hates any character), hates the way JKR wrote the relationships (or hates any aspect of her writing) but that people honestly believe that by having three boyfriends over the course of two or three years, she IS an actual slut. (Hence my "If Ginny is a slut, I am the whore of Babylon" bit, and that the only part of my post which is not completelt tongue in cheek is the fact that I don't like David Thewlis' moustache. *g*)
I just look at them, and all I can really think to say is, "You keep using that word -- I do not think it means what you think it means."
I was the Whore of RAF Chicksands. I actually had male friends I didn't sleep with (and some that I did). Oh, those wild military days.
Ginny is awesome. I'd hang out with her any day. People take this shit way too seriously, dear God! Do the Ginny haters have a pledge like that Snape lady? *g*
I have no idea - by the time I see things, they've usually been fandom wanked somewhere. And most of the really good shipping wars happened before I got to fandom. Thank god! I loathe shipping wars. Then again, lots of character hate is a by-product of shipping wars.
What? Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no! And it ain't over now! 'Cause when the going gets tough . . . the tough get going! Who's with me? Let's Go! Come on! AAAAEEEEEGGGHHHH!!
*sigh*
What the fuck happened to the Fandom I used to know? Where's the spirit? Where's the guts, huh? "Ooh, we're afraid to go with you Lisa, we might get in trouble." Well just kiss my ass from now on! Not me! I'm not gonna take this. Dumbledore, he's a dead man! Sirius, dead! Ginny that slut...
I had never even thought of Ginny as being even remotely slutty until happening upon the idea in fandom. One of these two lovely ladies above me said it already, but hello! she's a teenaged girl. Of course she's going to have multiple boyfriends. And god forbid she like more than one at the same time. Oh, the horror! I've always liked Ginny and don't see anything disparaging about her.
You're absolutely correct though: there isn't a HINT of sluttiness, let alone proper sexual activity. There's a fuck of a lot of subtext, but that's just because pervs like me like to read between the lines ;D
Apparently if James had lived, he would have abused Harry (because of how he treated Snape when he was 15.) Good thing he died then, yeah? (There's an actual thread about it over at the CoS forums at Mugglenet! Will make your eyes bleed!) *headdesk*
Oh God, I've heard about that. Because bullying someone who's pretty evil all by themselves and a tosser to the bird you dig is obviously symptomatic of being an irrevocable psycopath.

Junior high school all over again. "I don't like her because she likes him but I like him too..."
So glad those days are over. Er... usually. :P

Btw, your Babylon para just about killed me dead.

None of the HP characters are even remotely slutty in canon. (They're all whores in fanfic though! *g*) God, fandom kills me!

5a. The person you are at age 15 defines who you will be/become as an adult. Unless you are Snape.
