do you think that, if i had the chance, i would choose self-righteous ignorance and, in hand, be happy...or would i stay the contemplative critic that i am who wants to improve the system and change the world.. which goes in hand with an unrelenting unsatisfaction with the planet that my feet are firmy grounded on... choosing happiness makes me ( Read more... )

that's a question that i think a lot of us ask ourselves sometime. but have you ever noticed that you ask that mainly when you feel like nothing that you're doing is having any effect? for me it is anyways. it's not a lack of caring, it's just a feeling that it doesnt matter anyways.

what you have to look at then is if you really are doing things. it's a lot harder to actually change things than most people would like, so you just have to look at the way you're doing things. instead of going to a protest, go out and feed some homeless people, volunteer for somewhere, or send what you can to worthy organizations that actually do help people. legistlative change will almost never happen, i've noticed the only way to make any real change is direct action. if the opportunity presents itself, less passive direct action can be both imensly effective and a big boost to your spirit. but do whatever you can, just try to make a change and dont give up hope.

I REALLY understand how you're feeling. As a matter of fact, you sound exactly as I did a couple of years ago (which makes sense, because I do think you're a few years younger than me!)

Here's what helped me: Getting out of the country.

I spent so much time traveling and traveling and traveling... Seeing new ways of living helped broaden my perspective and become more productive with my disdain.
