Repeat After Me

Well, from the land of the flat, otherwise known as Ohio, a woman was arrested for putting her baby in the microwave. Yeah, you read that right and I knew of no good way to introduce this humrously. There really is no good way to talk about a baby getting killed because someone is too damn stupid to know YOU DON'T PUT BABIES IN THE MICROWAVE. The ( Read more... )

Random question (since you probably know more about this than I do): What are the odds that this was the result of severe postpartum depression? I know that it is very, very rare for mothers to harm their infants as a result of this (my social studies teacher in High School said her grandmother suffered from PPD but would attempt to kill herself, not any of her children), but it does happen.

For the record, I am still horrified by this, and while I do not believe in capital punishment, I do think that at the very least a judge should consider having this woman sterilized. Because, yes, there is a non-zero chance that if she has another child then she will kill it, too.

Right. Bed.

Well, is it possible: yes. The problem is, I don't give a damn. It affects about 25% of new mothers (cite). There are 1.6 million live births a year in the US and I don't hear about 400,000 deaths by mother per year. While the baby in this case was one month old, yeah, still don't care. Needle, electric chair, or I'll fucking do it.

On RFID chips...

The average RFID chip is smaller than the wavelength of microwave radiation and thus you'd have to position it right (not in a cold spot) for it to have any chance of doing something spectacular. YMMV.
