Check out this British guy's tsunami survival tale. He was on a freaking train that was derailed by the wave!

Wow - he did not ask for donations. I guess I would donate if somewhere safer than the coastal areas would be rebuilt. That is not going to happen on this side of the moon.

Yeah, humans have a regrettable tendency of building up cities on coastlines and other areas that are ridiculously unsafe in the event of a storm surge or tsunami. While the death toll is ridiculous, it should not be surprising to anyone... yet the whole world seems to be gasping and wondering 'Oh how did this happen?' To them I say, you should not be surprised if you get wiped out by the thirty foot wave when your village is only 2 feet above sea level, (and you do not have any sea walls or dikes in place!) The math is pretty damn simple!

I wholly agree - you think that might force these areas to adopt appropriate safety standards?

the weather guy on one of the news channels was going on about that when i was watching him on HDTV...

somewhere down in galveston a bunch of houses got washed away in '83, they were legally required to not rebuild within a few hundred feet of the water but did anyway, now they're just gonna get fucked up again the next time a big hurricane comes through.

duuuuuhhhhhhhhh
