Actually, Tel-Aviv's origins are far more boring, if I recall correctly. It was a bunch of sand dunes north of Yaffo that the Jews actually bought from the Arabs, if I'm not mistaken, because no one was really using them.

Later it grew so big it engulfed Yaffo, and a bunch of other places.
