I love this. Did you enclose a self-addressed postcard in order to invite your unknown soldier to write back? I think a two-way chat might be fun--give the soldier something to look forward to--your letters & gifts! I read the FAQ and I realize they are not "required" to respond. But I'll give it a try.

I also like the hint about sending small stuffed toys, like Beanie Babies, to the soldiers because they enjoy giving them to the children they meet in Iraq/Afghanistan.

I did put in a postcard, but mostly because it was pretty. I put my address in the letter in case they want to write back, but I'm not holding my breath.

I noticed in the list (long) of people to write to that one of the things they frequently requested if they had women in their group was tampons & pads. You'd think the freaking military could supply what they need - yeesh! Another thing they mention frequently is hand lotion. I imagine being in the desert without it would SUCK. I probably apply it at least 15 times a day in Nevada & it still never feels like enough.

I was thinking I'd like to be in touch with a young female soldier, then dismissed that notion as me being a bit sexist. Now you've mentioned that the ladies need tampons/pads, I imagine it might seem weird to them to receive 'em from a male they've never met, and might be more likely to write back to their gifting girlfriend in the States. How could the military not supply something this basic? Do soldiers have to find their own toilet paper, too?
