"I'm getting married. On purpose this time."
She and Jack were out to dinner (Avery was away again, Liddy was with the nanny and something about that depressed Liz), desserts being served (he had moved the candle from the middle of the table, of course). Jack stared at her for a moment; Liz wondered if she announced the news in such an overly upbeat voice that it raised suspicion.
"To?"
"Wesley Snipes. Not the actor. The British guy that I hate. Hated. Past tense."
"For a moment, I did assume you'd resorted to becoming a Prison Pen Pal." He paused. "Why?"
"Why?"
"Why are you marrying him?"
"Maybe I fell in love with him."
"Did you?"
She considered lying. "No."
"Then--"
"It's convenient. I'm not getting any younger. Obviously. Maybe it's that Carol wasn't like me in the *right* ways. Maybe I need someone who wants separate bedrooms and sex just for procreation, and maybe that'll be easier. Maybe--"
"Relationships aren't supposed to be easy."
"Really?"
"Really?"
"You and Avery are the same person. Not that... I'm not saying it's not going to work. I am not saying that. You're alike in the right ways. She won't point a gun at you. What I'm saying--"
"Our similarities, our compatible viewpoints, don't mean I'm not challenged, even when we're not directly challenging each other. We... fulfill each other in ways a couple sleeping in separate bedrooms can't."
"Are you thinking about sex now? Don't do that in front of me."
He was silent again. There was something in his expression, something she couldn't pinpoint. "And, honestly, I always thought you could do better than yourself."
"I thought so, too. But it's not going to happen, so I might as well... You told me to settle once, remember? You were right. So be happy for me. I'm happy for you."
He nodded. "I'm happy for you."
"Good," she replied. "Good."
