The blanket is at the foot of the bed, the ends of the sheets are off the mattress, and Liz feels satisfied and content and guilty.
"I'm a bad person."
"You're not a bad person; you simply couldn't resist me. Many women have had difficulty doing so."
The arrogance, Liz lets slide because she remembers the need in his voice when he said, "Don't marry him." How wounded he looked on her wedding day. His silence when, after a week of avoidance, she said, "Really, could you picture us lasting?"
She remembers, so she lets him embrace the victory he never thought he'd have. It would've been better to let him win then, but they had their chance (she was the one who deemed their night together a 'mistake,' but he didn't try to convince her otherwise until she had a guy who wanted, for some reason, to spend the rest of his life with her), and that was it.
Until they began again with Liz pressed against a wall, her legs wrapped around him. Continued with long afternoons in his bed (she refused to go to a hotel).
"And," he continues, "you do intend to leave him."
"That makes this better?"
"It means you're sleeping with me for all the right reasons."
"Yes. I am the most noble of cheaters." She pauses. "Are you saying there's a wrong reason to sleep with you?"
"Actually, I can't think of one."
She kisses his cheek before she goes for his mouth. "I love you."
(Over the past month, she's said this to Jack more than to her husband, and that, strangely, is not a regret.)
He echoes her words while his hand is between her legs, and the combination of his breath against her neck and his thumb circling her clit makes it easier to pretend she's done everything right.
