After Floyd moves back to New York, Jack becomes a single man.
Not that Liz was technically his girlfriend; she certainly didn't consider it a relationship and he never actively sought anything beyond the casual 'friends with benefits' scenario she offered. (She once used the term 'fuck buddy' to describe him until she quickly realized that, though she'd seen a lot of Sex and the City episodes, she wasn't 'super comfortable' with applying Carrie Bradshaw's entire lexicon to her life.) But he wasn't seeing anyone else during the time she often found herself in his bed. Further, he can't pretend he desired to spend his evenings with a woman who wasn't Liz.
So when she decides to pick up where she and Floyd left off, Jack does lose what they were even if it wasn't declared to be meaningful by either of them. Even if he has no right to talk her out of ending something that never began. Even if he doesn't have a reason to think she vaguely considered a future with him. Even if it's too early for him to say he's ready to raise the children he knows she wants. And despite all those evens, all those reasons why he shouldn't find this ending hurtful or surprising, both emotions linger.
Jack had suspected himself to be the one more in love, but it never occurred to him he was the only one in love.
