This sounds to me like your vision of your "true self" would be rather idealistic as well as being rather abstract and not that integrated after all. I would think that in every situation there must be an option that is the option that matched what would be a "true" option for you, if only because there is no better one.
I think that when you are truly comfortable with who you are, you do not worry about being true to yourself, but just take the best course of action that you can discern as you encounter particular situations. Perhaps the whole "true self" conceptual imagery is at this stage confusing rather than helpful.
This whole mantra being rather on the abstract, guidance level rather than on a practical one, I would think it would rather be the solution to no actual problems whatsoever.

Too me its more of a better place to start from. Sort of like ” Wear clean underwear”
Its easier to deal with whatever shit flies our way when we are true to ourselves and we’re wearing clean underwear.
