I actually never did, but I think you can actually pet Matilda and hang out with her. I suggest calling ahead and asking; I don't know if policies have changed since I was there last year!
I didn't stay in a room, but I was in the lobby and some of the conference halls when Adam was doing a contract job (he sets up computer equipment for conferences, and the Algonquin was hosting a big one). I did see the cat, though. She's gorgeous.
