Wow. A lot of my friends are participating in a "strike" against LJ on this friday. I, personally, will not be participating. (although I may not post that day, depends on how busy I get

I have a Basic account, and I see ads all the time on LJ. I'm fine with that. A business has to make money, and I don't begrudge them this.
My objection is based entirely on my fear that I might soon be forced to switch to a paid account. I was already considering it -- I'm still considering it -- but the idea that I won't have an option to keep my Basic account bugs me. And if they're elimininating the Basic accounts for new members, then it's probably a matter of time before they eliminate them for existing members.
No, Basic means that I do see ads on the screens. Trust me -- there are ads.
And I never upgraded because I don't need to. I'm not an artist so I never have that to share, I never post photos, this is a "secret" site that my friends and family who are squicked by my continuing obsession with TMNT don't know about -- there's not been any need. I only needed to be able to see my friends' postings, and to be able to post my own text.
I was thinking about upgrading to a Paid account for the same reason I give money to NaNoWriMo every year -- I really appreciate the community and the service, and it only seems right that I give some money to show my appreciation.
nah, it's pretty simple. New people joining LJ will only be able to get a plus account or a paid account. Paid accounts wont be effected all all. That's what makes me twitch an eyebrow about people saying that it's voilating thier rights to know about a service they pay for...
I don't see what the big hoo ha is then..I mean people always want things for free and want all the best things and best service. Well I know coming from customer service, you get what you pay for...so if you don't want ads, then buy a paid account. It's that simple.
"The majority of users on LJ have basic accounts." Where do you get that info? I've read that only about 15% of LJ accounts are basic accounts.
I have *NEVER* seen an ad on LJ that interferes with coding (and I write code myself) ... I think this is because LJ keeps thier ads self-contained and simple (not a bunch of the "punch the monkey" ad-games)
LJ *could* go the route of ff.net with the annoying pop-up in your face ads, but I *WOULD* protest that vehemently.
Well, I cant remember where I got my info, but I remember reading that the majority of accounts on LJ are plus accounts.
strange. I guess I haven't messed too much with the CSS coding, so I haven't had any issues. Thankfully, you can still create communities with the "basic" level :)
Fanfiction.net has those annoying ads that say "Fanfiction.net is sponsered by:" and then appear over the page you were TRYING to read. I've never seen an option to make the ads disapear, unless it's only an option for paying members of FF.net.
I'm pretty annoyed at the whole 'strike' thing myself...seems like a lot of wasted energy for something that's really not all that important in the grand scheme of things. If you want to get your panties in a knot about something, do it over something like civil issues, or...whatever else.
I don't mind the ads, myself...and I don't particularly care if they're on my page or not. If they were going to force me to get a paid account, sure I'd move on to something else...it's not a bad price, but it's also not something I can afford in good concience.

But I don't want to be forced into it.

If they start forcing people to upgrade to paid accounts, then I will get grumpy.
As it is, I don't mind having an ad or two on my LJ
