"No matter how subtle the wizard..."

Uhh, for some reason the LJ comment notifications have declared a virtual siege on my inbox, and are blocking everything except personal emails from coming through. Just a heads-up, y'all-if I'm hideously late in replying to something, it's probably because I don't even know it exists. I'll be checking existing conversations, but I won't catch ( Read more... )

I think it mainly depends into which departure of "importance" you want to go. Science? Literature? Art? Music? A Politician? Do you want someone really well known or someone nobody really noticed?
What about the inventer of the paper clip? The first man in open space (that was the Russian Juri Gagarin) contrary to the first man on the moon. What about John E. Douglas who helped developing and improving the art of profiling? Maybe Dian Fossey and her commitment to the gorillas that killed her in the end?
You could even go for J.R.R. Tolkien xD And I think I don't have to mention why that is. Heck, you could even go for the first mangaka drawing Shonen-Ai! If you feel like going mainstream, maybe Elvis or the Beatles since they definitively had shaking and moving ;)

I'm really interested in the social/philosophical aspect of the 20th century, because for all the warfare and diplomacy going on, what really defines that timeframe were its ideologies. My ideal subject would be an artist of some sort, with a healthy side order of activism-anyone who know only made a change in their chosen profession, but also, by virtue of that change, in their society. Eugene Ionesco came to mind, as well as Yeshayahu Leibowitz and Winston Churchill-but I think, in the end, I might end up doing Isaac Asimov. (Still not sure, though, since I dunno if he was socially involved enough.)

Your suggestions are excellent! :D Thanks so much; they really inspired me. I was initially hooked on Juri Gagarin-it's such an intriguing concept, and it really is a great accomplishment-but I talked to my teacher and she said it "wasn't major enough". D:< Goddamn school. Your help is much appreciated, though ( ... )

Oooh. Well, Asimov is just about the coolest choice you could have made. Really awesome guy 'n all. And influential, I'd bet they'd look back on his works two hundred years in the future when the robots start to rebel and all x"D

Oh yes, what we consider traditional manga shonen-ai nowadays. I think the key-manga for that genre was "Juichigatsu no Gimunajiumu" by Moto Hagio (1971). Or maybe it was Kaze to "Ki no Uta" by Keiko Takemiya (1976). Had surprising success and led to the foundation of a magazine, Comic Jun that still publishes Boy Love stories :3 I think you know it! x)

Ahahaha, EPIC WIN. It's like the educationally-legitimate Candy Barr! I've already fallen in love with the concept of researching Isaac Asimov, but otherwise, I'd've totally chosen her. *_* Although, between you and me, browsing for pictures of Mata Hari would have probably resulted in a ridiculous amount of Alphonse Mucha-esque drawings and... not so much in any coherent English. *chagrin*

Ahahah, you have the same... um... compulsion than me, then. *totally loves Mata Hari pics JUST BECAUSE OF THAT*

Anyway, good luck with your research! *cheers*

Ummmm... Winston Churchill? *is clueless about history* It's very unfortunate that you can't do Candy Barr, I had never heard of her *is even more clueless about history* but she sounds way more interesting than anyone else I can think of. :D

By the way, HI, haven't talked to you in ages. *waves*

HI YOU. :DDD What's up? How're you doing? By what virtue did you manage to read my mind? I was seriously contemplating Winston Churchill-he has the best quotes ever-but was eventually won over my Isaac Asimov. Robotics, man, it's all about the robotics. XD

Well, Winston Churchill was the first person that came to mind (partly because I think my dad has a slight man crush on him, XD). Obviously I have psychic powers. Unfortunately these do not extend to allowing me to teleport to class...

Which leads to what's up with me, which is that I AM NOW A COLLEGE STUDENT, omg. What is this madness, I ask you. Actually so far I am finding that college is easier than high school, I mean it is only my third week here, but really I get significantly less homework than I did last year. O.o This is probably in part because I never actually bother to do my Calculus homework, but since we don't have to hand it in I feel that I can be forgiven.

Also, I am totally pumped for NaNoWriMo. I am going to win this year, I can smell it. :D ( ... )

WAIT WHAT, NaNoWriMo, yourself, fame and glory? This is relevant to my interests! Tell me more, beautiful; November is tap-tap-tapping on our windowsill and I am eager to meet your characters beforehand. Must make a good first impression, all that. :D
