Mia had just spent an afternoon and evening at the boys' house to spend time with the other animals. Since Wes and Aidan were getting home sometime tomorrow, she'd spent extra time straightening up and making sure the fridge was stocked so they wouldn't have to worry about that when they got home. Animals had been walked and fed, lights were out, and the house was locked up.

It was late and she had just gotten home herself, and was unloading the other pets from the car. She let Jaida out of the backseat, then picked up the pet carrier from the front seat that held the kittens Bella and Edward.

Her cell phone suddenly blared with country music as she unlocked her door and went inside. Smiling faintly, Mia answered without even needing to see who it was: her temporary but friendly and welcoming roommate from D.C. last year. They didn't keep in touch much after both working on the same program, but it was still good to hear from her.

"Hey Carrie," she greeted as she set the carrier down on the floor and dumped her purse and keys on the side table. "How's things down in D.C.?"

"Hi, Mia. Oh, things are fine." Carrie's warm, friendly voice was accompanied by country music playing in the background and Mia chuckled at how some things never changed. Carrie continued, "How are you? Are you doing okay?"

Something in Carrie's voice seemed to be just a tad... off. Almost a bit stilted. Like she was trying too hard to sound normal. Mia's brow furrowed. "Yeah, I'm fine. Are you okay?"

Jaida was waiting at the sliding glass door at the side of the kitchen, anxious to go out to the fenced in yard. Mia headed over there first to open the door for the pup and slide it shut again before letting the kittens out of the carrier.

"I'm okay, sure." Carrie's voice was still slightly nervous. "But I think there was something a little weird earlier tonight. Did those guys talk to you yet about the survey?"

Mia froze. Whether it was because Carrie seemed unsettled, or it was Carrie's tone of voice, or whether it was Mia's long-lived paranoia serving her well, she felt a familiar sensation prickling along the back of her neck: something was wrong. She didn't know how, where, or what was wrong, and it was a sensation she hadn't experienced much on this planet, but she'd know it anywhere.

Mia made sure to make it look like things were normal. She went past the carrier -- Bella and Edward would have to wait -- and headed for her bedroom. "What guys? What survey?" She tried not to sound worried or on alert so as not to worry Carrie or tip anyone off who might've found a way to listen in, despite her counter-surveillance devices set up around her apartment.

"There were these guys here earlier, saying they were from the security program we worked on last year? And they were conducting this feedback survey on everyone's experience and did we like working there, that sort of thing. But they were asking me an awful lot of questions about you."

"Me?" Mia was digging through her hidden drawer for her lifeform scanner, needing to see if the perimeter had been breached at all. "Why? What kinds of questions did they ask?"

"I have no idea why," Carrie was close to babbling nervously now. "They wanted to know things like what kind of person you were and your background, your habits, really weird stuff, and asked how good were you at hacking. They said it was so they'd know what kind of people liked working on their security programs, but I'm not sure I buy it."

Mia found the lifeform scanner and checked it carefully. The perimeter hadn't been breached, but that only meant no one had been in her apartment while she'd been gone. "And what did you tell them about me?" Even Mia couldn't keep the hardness out of her voice. It was unintentional, nothing accusatory towards Carrie, but this whole thing smacked of wrong.

"Nothing, Mia! I swear! I kept trying to ask them why didn't they just ask you yourself and I didn't tell them much. "

"What did they look like?" Mia was walking quickly to gather her important papers and make sure her sidearm was loaded.

"Just guys in suits. Average white guys. Nothing special about them."

"Did they say anything else weird? Ask anything specific that stood out?"

"They were trying to find out if I knew any other hacking projects you'd worked on, but I honestly didn't know. I lied on some stuff. Did I do the right thing?" Carrie asked tentatively.

"You did perfect, Carrie. I'm glad you called me. Listen, I have to go, but call me if anything out of the ordinary happens, okay? Call me first thing. And -- be careful." Carrie promised she would and Mia hung up quickly.

She didn't know if a bounty hunter from home had found her or if-- But the other option made no sense. She was a nobody here and hadn't pissed anyone off. It didn't matter, anyway. Her years of training and paranoia were coming to the forefront. The prickling sensation on the back of her neck was getting stronger. She knew she had to get out of there. She was being watched, or at least had been watched. People were asking about her. She didn't know who or why, she didn't know what was going on, and she didn't know where to go yet, but all she knew was that she had to leave. Now.
