The office was decent enough, M discovered, although not quite the digs she was used to. Still, it had a window, and enough space to move around the desk that she didn't cramped. Maybe even by the end of the term, it would feel like it belonged to her ( Read more... )

Nadia arrived not long after Marty, looking tired, but determined. "You wanted to see me, ma'am?" she asked coldly.

Nadia was trained enough to pick up that slight softening.

The fact that she was dating a boy with an excellent deadpan probably helped, as well.

"Then I'll see you on the first day of class."

"Very good. I expect you to be a bit early, and if you discover you're going to miss a class, I expect to hear from you. Exceptions to that would be if you're kidnapped or unconscious. And in the first instance, I expect you to try and get some sort of message to me anyway."

The brightness in M's eyes suggested that she might be teasing. Or possibly that she was serious, but simply amused.

Nadia found herself rather desperately hoping that M hadn't somehow stumbled upon that story. She was still rather embarrassed to admit that she had been kidnapped, and had failed to make her own escape from the drug dealers.

"I'll keep that in mind. Until then, Professor M." She turned, leaving the manilla envelope on the professor's desk, and headed for the door.

"Just M will suffice, Santos," she replied, in the professional tone she used for her own people, when she wasn't lecturing them or threatening to have them executed.

"I'll see you on Wednesday."

And after Nadia had left, the envelope was carefully put away into the young woman's file.
