Barbara's funeral will be next Monday. I'd like to go, but Karen isn't sure that Mark and Louise are old enough to appreciate it, so I may be called in to kidwatch, since even if they're not going to the funeral they may not be feeling up to going to school that day

I haven't been to many funerals, really. The first was my grandmother's. In some ways, I was not at all in a good state - even though I was fifteen, and she and I had been very close, to the point of her being very upfront about my being her favourite grandchild - my mother didn't actually tell me that she'd died until a couple of days after the death. In many ways I was glad she'd died; she'd had stroke after stroke, becoming steadily less physically capable and more and more distressed and demented, so I was in a kind of weird numb-angry-happy state
