I actually started looking for old school stuff because of your old school cosplay post. First thing I did was look up Speed Racer~ XD

Then again, I remember being obsessed with this show. Never did figure out if she got the flower or not though... :o

I remember seeing this anime about a boy who kept getting attacked by weird see/machine/monsters-ish. And he has this mermaid girlfriend. And there were jellyfishes who'd announce weird things.
And a wicked statue that the boy finally battles. And when he finally defeats the statue, he discovers he wiped out an entire underwater civilization.
Can't remember any chara or show name, so I haven't been able to track this one down yet.

Correction, I wasn't hallucinating. The one I saw was Ie Naki Ko (starring a boy), and this is from Ie Naki Ko Remi
