I like how you use the perception filter to make it seem like Ianto is normal to humans. And I like the reasons why Ianto goes to work for London and even when the Doctor finds him, he doesn't budge from TW. Love the relationship he has with Jack - how its not perfect.
Wonderful reactions by everyone to discovering the truth about Ianto. I think Gwen was the best - with the writing on her hand as well.
Really love what you did with Jack here, explaining why Ianto would stay with him, even though Jack feels wrong and the Doctor rejects him for what Ianto embraces him.
And finally, I like how you leave this open for future, dare I hope, sequels. Fantastic story and even better than I originally had hoped.
Thanks so much for your kind words! The relationship with Jack turned out to be one of the more interesting parts to write in this. Because Jack is messed up and one main defining part of their relationship in the show was Lisa -- seriously messed up by any definition. Add a year of torture and that whole "I made the Toclafane" thing, and you have one messed up boss, who still manages to not be totally insane.
As you may be able to tell, I like Jack a lot :)
Incorporating the wrongness that the Doctor noted in Utopia was interesting -- I ended up going whole-hog with it, which fit the narrative style well, imo. Ianto's point of view in this, especially after he went temporarily nuts, was made of glee to write.
This is so great. Has completely distracted me from homework for almost an hour, and I should really be getting back to that...
I love how everyone reacts to Ianto, how Jack is still damaged from the year that wasn't, how Ianto says no to the Doctor.
Oh, as for Ianto's mother...I never seen the old who, but is it a reference to the TimeLord lady who travelled with the Doctor for a while? Romanan, or something like that?
I will do almost anything for the homework distraction cause.
I wanted to introduce the similarities and the differences between Jack and Ianto -- both are sort of damaged (Jack wins that one because he's lived longer) and both want to save the world and everyone around them and they're both arrogant about it but where Jack needs people (the Doctor, Torchwood, Ianto), Ianto holds back and doesn't cling to that extent (and of course, Jack not being able to die has something to do with that damage too). And this all crystallized in Ianto telling the Doctor to ship off (for now).
And as for Ianto's mother... well, I had a certain idea in mind when I started this fic, but deliberately left it vague in text. It wouldn't be seemly to suggest out flat that she who became the War Queen and President of the Nine Gallifeys (Romana is her name) had a little baby Ianto... not seemly at all. Hee hee. (Actually, I've never much seen old Who either, but what I've seen of Romana she was pretty rocking)
How utterly charming a concept - I will admit the time loops threw me out of the story a bit when introduced - I thought there might be a copy/paste error...
But so much fun! And is it me, or is the Doctor a Daddy?
I thought about adding a warning about the first time loop, but in the end I let it ride on its own (or forgot, something like that) and I think that it's a short enough segment to work. I will say that I agonized about that section quite a bit to make it work. It's something that works *very* well when dramatized... in words, not to much.
And the Doctor? A daddy? whatever makes you say that? *winks*
