This morning's meeting included a brief but lively discussion about the nature of blogs, in the context of discussing CIT's planned blog service. (It's intended mostly for faculty and staff for projects and courses, not for public personal blog use ( Read more... )

I think a blog is a different animal than an email string. It's more like a tangental, heirarchical, organized discussion format - coupled with an old fashion diary format.

Email is very linear and doesn't accomplish the same function well if at all. IMHO.

well personally, i think that it all depends on who the audience is. for example, mark everyone reads your journal. and you decide by setting filters who reads it. where as an email-list, typically if you send it to a list, everyone gets it, and everyone reads the replies, making (in my opion) more complication. with a one-to-one, email, you are sending something personal. (unless you cc people in). so it really depends who you want to read what you write.

then there is snail mail, where pens die an pencils chip, and mail takes a week to get anywhere...
