I have of late been playing at writing more than working at it.

And play is fine, and it might be what I need in my busy life right now. But, it gets me no closer to being a serious writer. And come January when my part/full time job might become writer, this cannot be just play. I must make it work first, play when I get work done ( Read more... )

Just because what you are writing is never going to be used in a book doesn't mean that it's not helping you build your craft. I've been writing FE fluff all week because I haven't had the brain/time to write/edit seriously, but it still helps me get a feel for the characters and world. And it's teaching me POV (which I still have issues with) and strong writing. It can be fun and helpful at the same time :)

And if I was playing with original character I'd agree. I know that I'm working through something that will get internalized and will be useful someday. But it's not really moving my 'want to be published' writing further.

Plus, my big issue is plot. Character, POV, even much of writing I know I can do good enough. Plot has always been my week point.

I can understand trying to be a serious writer while dealing with a busy schedule. I haven't even tried to revise my first novel yet. (I think I'm scared.)

You can do it, though. I know you can.:)

Yeah. I'm still scared to really send my first novel to lots of readers to get a critique of it. But then I know their thoughts will help make it stronger and possibly publishable, and fixing issues with that novel will help me fix things with other novels.
