It is a lovely photo of a happier time for them both (assuming so). I love seeing David in an unguarded moment. I don't remember seeing the metal necklace during the movie and I've always wonder what the leather thong tied around his wrist and finger were about.

He must have damaged his finger, or fingers, and needed to protect them. I don't recall it being part of the film, though I could be wrong.
Boys were always having to wear these leather things at school about that time, having managed to damage themselves somehow or other.
