For me it's the traveling part. I usually stress out about getting there and back. The actual part when I'm there is usually pretty good unless there's bad weather.

I think traveling well is a talent.

Agreed. I would be fine once the plane took off. Getting to the airport, heck, packing, I would be pretty stressed.

the obligatory Caravan holidays to Northern France are never a whole heap of relaxing joy. Several hours in the car to the ferry - several hours on the ferry trying to sleep 12 decks below sea level with family members/friends being sick - several hours in the early morning to the Caravan site. The entire of Northern France being full of British people anyway playing cricket on the beach, listening to the bbc radio and eating chips. Then there's the mad stacking up on fags/alcohol at the last supermarket before Calais/Roscoff. It's not worth the effort, we may as well have all stayed at home.

Same with Jersey, my feeling on that are the same, especially as it rained the entire week we were there, may as well just have stayed at home.

Oh wow, that almost sounds as unpleasant as Texas with my herd.

there's also the even more irritating variant which is "the booze cruise" This is a day trip to France which involves leaving home at 6 am getting the Ferry to Calais which takes 90 minutes, driving to the nearest French supermarket, bulk buying all the cigarettes and alcohol that will fit in the car, getting back on the ferry and being home for about 9pm. All you see is some very boring French motorways ( ... )

Ron & I had a phrase, "death march to Bataan", referring to the mad running about "TO HAVE FUN, DAMMIT" on vacation. We strove to do the opposite. Aside from some must-do things, we tried to stay as laid back as possible.

The 2 trips to MediaWest & going to Ashley_Pitt's for Thanksgiving pretty much compose all the vacation I've had since Ron died....because going to Texas to see the sibling, et al, and going to DisneyWorld with them...does not fall under the category of relaxing fun.

Hey, harlot, GO FROLIC FOR ME !!

Frolicking I can do, but everyone on the ship is asleep right now... I will have to spend my time here for the moment, do you mind?

I will admit that when I went to see my friends in Germany I had a list much longer than my ten days there would allow me to take in. I figured out early on that the key is to pick A Thing and really enjoy the hell out of it, then move on to another, and not to stress about OMG ALL THE THINGS/PLACES/STUFF and that means I didn't see everything, but what I did see and experience I really enjoyed of the things I did get to cross off my list. So my afternoon in Rothenberg with JR was all about really enjoying his company and wandering around a city older than my country, standing on walls older than my state, taking pictures of flowerboxes because they were pretty and made me happy and maybe not taking pictures of historically signifigant things. My day in Strausbourg with Teresa was all about getting to know her better (she was from another town in our state and I only met her a few times after they got married. JR and I have known each other since we were ten) and we stayed in a very small section of the city and I loved every ( ... )

Choose your restrooms wisely. Fast food restaurants are almost always clean. Gas station/mini marts...ONLY in SEVERE situations.

It's a nurse thing.

Your sister offers great advice - I, too, tend to pee whenever I have a chance.

I hate the travelling part of vacation. The older I get, the more I hate it. As a girl I did a LOT of travelling all over the world for my job and that was exciting and new and Business Class but now the novelty has worn off and I hate the 'getting there' part of any vacation. Frankly, I'd rather stay at home.

It would seem that the actual moving from Point A (home) to Point B (the fun place) is just about everyone's common point of annoyance. I am with you all on this!
